Brauchtums- und Genussfest Prad (Tradition and Taste Festival)

A festival in the heart of the Vinschgau Valley

The Brauchtums- und Genussfest, or Tradition and Taste Festival, takes place in the village square (Dorfplatz) of Prato allo Stelvio/Prad am Stilfserjoch, a municipality in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, in Trentino-Alto Adige. Situated at the foot of the Stelvio Pass and at the gateway to the Stelvio National Park, the village is renowned throughout South Tyrol for its commitment to preserving its unique customs. Organized by the Prato Tourist Association (Tourismusverein Prad), the event has become a staple of the autumn season, drawing visitors from across the valley.

The ancient traditions of Prato allo Stelvio

Few places in South Tyrol maintain such a vibrant heritage of folk rituals. During the festival, the village's signature customs are showcased:

• Zusslrennen: The ancient "winter expulsion" ritual, unique to Prato allo Stelvio. Young men, the Zussl, dress in white from head to toe, adorned with colorful ribbons and paper flowers, while wearing heavy belts with large bells often weighing over 20 kilograms.
• Goaßlschnölln: The art of whip-cracking (Goaßl), which echoes through the mountains with sharp, powerful snaps.
• Machgertanz: A traditional carnival dance, one of the village's cultural highlights.
• Tuifllauf: The parade of the famous "Tuifl" (devils), linked to the St. Nicholas tradition in December.

Market, cuisine, and music

Beyond the traditions, the day features a large craft and gourmet market, showcasing typical products from the Vinschgau valley. Visitors can also enjoy live cooking (Schaukochen), the traditional skittles game (Kegelbahn), and live music that enlivens the town center throughout the day. It is the perfect opportunity to savor the flavors of the South Tyrolean autumn in a friendly, convivial atmosphere.

Event information

The festival begins in the morning, around 9:30 AM, with the traditional Frühschoppen and continues throughout the day. Admission is free, and the event is designed for all ages. Prato allo Stelvio confirms its status as a hub of local folklore, where tradition and taste meet in the heart of Trentino-Alto Adige.
