San Piero Patti returns to 1356 with a historical pageant, period costumes, and the famous living Human Chess game

Every autumn, the village of San Piero Patti, nestled in the Nebrodi mountains in the province of Messina, turns back the clock to 1356. The Historical Re-enactment of the Arrival of Frederick IV of Aragon commemorates one of the most cherished events for the local community: the popular uprising against the oppressive Orioles barons and the subsequent arrival of the King of Sicily, who stopped at the village castle, heard the people's grievances, and acknowledged their rightful rebellion. It is a page of local history that the town guards with pride and brings to life once a year throughout the streets and squares of the historic center.
The highlight is the grand historical pageant that recreates the arrival of Frederick IV of Aragon and his court. Dozens of performers in sumptuous period costumes parade through the alleys, joined by historical groups from neighboring towns: the pageants of Patti (Regina Adelasia), Raccuja (Dominus Fortitudo - Terra dei Branciforti), Santa Lucia del Mela (Antiche Torri), and Itala (Ruggero e Costanza). The parade is further enriched by falconers, flag-wavers, and artist troupes that animate the route with medieval performances, sounds, and colors.
The spectacular heart of the event is the living Human Chess game, a match played on a giant chessboard with real people dressed in period costumes, taking place in Piazza Gorgone. The moves of the human "pieces" turn the game into a choreographic performance that captivates both adults and children, serving as a true hallmark of the San Piero Patti re-enactment.
The re-enactment merges with the Schiticchio d'Autunno, the town's food and wine festival: a journey through traditional cuisine, local products, new wine, and seasonal flavors. Food stalls, historic taverns, tastings, artisan markets, children's play areas, and guided tours of olive mills and water mills complete an immersive experience that weaves together memory, art, taste, and community participation.
Organized by the Municipality of San Piero Patti with the support of local associations, the event is one of the most anticipated autumn gatherings in the Nebrodi area of Messina. Admission is free, in a village that becomes the perfect setting for a weekend to rediscover the history, craftsmanship, and gastronomy of inland Sicily.
The Municipality of San Piero Patti has not yet published the dates and the official program for the 2026 edition of the Historical Re-enactment of the Arrival of Frederick IV of Aragon. As this is a recurring event that has taken place between October and November in recent years, it is reasonable to expect a new edition in the autumn of 2026.
The detailed program, including the historical pageant, the living Human Chess game in Piazza Gorgone, and the Schiticchio d'Autunno, will be communicated by the municipal administration in the weeks leading up to the event. It is recommended to check the official municipal channels for updates.
San Piero Patti is located in the Nebrodi hinterland, in the province of Messina. By car: take the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway to Patti or Brolo, then follow provincial roads inland (about 20-30 minutes). The nearest train station is Patti-San Piero Patti on the Tyrrhenian line.
The event takes place in autumn, between October and November, over a weekend (Saturday and Sunday). The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced.
Free. The event is accessible to everyone, including families and people with reduced mobility.
