A Christmas village at the gateway to the Vallo di Diano

For two weekends in December, Atena Lucana, a small town in the province of Salerno overlooking the Vallo di Diano in Campania, transforms into a charming Christmas village. The Botteghe di Natale occupy the square of the "Attilio Cirillo" municipal auditorium in the Atena Lucana Scalo district, featuring a row of illuminated wooden huts, festive music, and an atmosphere designed especially for families. It is a young but already deeply cherished event, created to showcase local artisans and producers during the busiest time of the year.

Artisan workshops and local crafts

The heart of the event lies in the artisan workshops: small exhibitors showcasing handmade creations, Christmas decorations, ceramics, textiles, woodwork, and gift ideas that are impossible to find in mass-market retail. The initiative was born with the organizers' stated goal of revitalizing and promoting the town by supporting the local economy and the many artisans who sell their typical products and handmade goods on-site.

The flavors of the Vallo di Diano

Alongside the workshops, you will find food stalls offering local culinary specialties and winter street food. The Vallo di Diano is a land of cheeses, cured meats, legumes, and fresh pasta, and on December evenings, the village becomes the perfect opportunity to taste products from small local producers without leaving Atena. The event also features a convivial side, with tasting sessions and a Christmas lunch that has closed the festivities in recent editions.

Magic for the little ones

The Botteghe di Natale have a strong family focus. Recent editions have included Santa's Grotto, where children can deliver their letters and take photos, as well as creative workshops, animated readings—including a reading of Dickens' A Christmas Carol—and a supervised play area inside the auditorium, allowing parents to explore the market in peace. The Insieme Onlus Social Cooperative participates with "La Bottega del Cuore," a space dedicated to items made by children during workshops, with proceeds supporting inclusive school projects.

Street performers and roving entertainment

The setting is brought to life by street performers and roving entertainment that moves through the village: stilt walkers, Christmas characters, live music, and short performances repeated throughout the evening. It is a formula the event inherited from its 2023 debut, when the workshops were set up in the historic center's houses and roving shows accompanied visitors from alley to alley.

A short but continuous history

The first edition took place in December 2023 in the historic center of Atena Lucana, promoted by the Pro Loco Athena Nova together with the Municipality, local associations, schools, and the parish. In 2024, the event was held in Piazza Caduti per la Pace, while in 2025, the third edition moved to Atena Lucana Scalo, in the auditorium square, expanding to six days over two weekends.

Atena Lucana is one of the oldest villages in the province of Salerno and is strategically located at the entrance to the Vallo di Diano, just a few kilometers from the Certosa di Padula and the Pertosa-Auletta caves. The upper town preserves its castle and medieval layout, while the Scalo, along the motorway axis, is the more modern and accessible part: this is where the Christmas village is now concentrated, easily reachable for those arriving from Basilicata and the inland Cilento.
