The rhythmic beat of barrels echoing through the streets of Orta di Atella

In Orta di Atella, a town in the province of Caserta, Campania, spring brings one of the most defining events of the Agro Atellano region: the Bottari Allegorical Float Parade. For an entire weekend, the town's main streets are filled with large, decorated floats carrying local musicians, while the rhythmic pounding of barrels becomes the community's heartbeat. This is no ordinary carnival parade; it is a grassroots celebration built around an ancient peasant percussion tradition that has never faded here.
The 'bottari' are musicians who carry on a musical tradition found in the area between the provinces of Caserta and Naples. Their instruments are not drums, but barrels, vats, and scythes, struck in rhythm with wooden mallets to create a tight, powerful, and almost hypnotic sound. This rhythm is accompanied by traditional a cappella songs dedicated to Sant'Antuono (Saint Anthony the Abbot, protector of animals), the central figure around whom all the local ritual 'battuglie' revolve. First-time visitors are often struck by the physical intensity of the sound: you feel the vibrations in your chest long before you distinguish the melody.
The heart of the event lies in the floats prepared for the occasion, which host musicians from the main local companies and travel through the city streets, bringing the frenetic rhythms of the local bottari with them. The companies that have enlivened recent editions include:
These are genuine musical and social associations, particularly focused on the town's youth. Some have been working for a decade to promote local folklore and the traditions of the Agro Atellano. Each float involves dozens of musicians, and the preparation—building the structures, rehearsing, and tuning the barrels—takes weeks of collective effort.
The parade in its current form began in 2023, followed by a second edition in May 2024 and a third from May 2 to 4, 2025. A fourth edition has been announced for 2026. However, the roots run much deeper: as early as May 2018, Orta di Atella hosted a weekend entirely dedicated to the bottari, with four floats on the streets—including 'A Nova Cumpagni', the Rione Croce Santa float, and 'Suon e Passion'—each featuring over a hundred musicians.
The event is held under the patronage of the municipal administration. Mayor Antonino Santillo has described it as a vital event for the territory and for a population that looks forward to this annual appointment to rediscover its history. Meanwhile, the Councilor for Youth Policies, Pasquale Pellino, emphasized how the floats act as a generational bridge between past and present, which is essential for preserving local traditions.
The third edition in May 2025 was partially suspended. Following a brawl that broke out on Via Garibaldi at the end of one of the evenings, the mayor signed an urgent ordinance revoking authorization for the remainder of the event, cancelling the final Sunday parade. It was an isolated but significant incident that sparked public reflection on event security and the need to preserve its authentic, grassroots spirit.
The parade takes place entirely outdoors along the streets of central Orta di Atella and is free of charge: no tickets are required; simply find a spot along the route. It is a family-friendly event, though visitors should be aware of the very high sound volume near the floats. Those arriving from out of town can combine their visit with an exploration of the Agro Atellano, the land of the ancient Oscan Atella and the famous 'fabulae atellanae', now the heart of one of the most densely populated areas in the province of Caserta.
For 2026, the community of Orta di Atella has announced the fourth edition of the Bottari Allegorical Float Parade, confirming its commitment to bringing the decorated floats and percussionist companies back to the streets, which in recent years have made the event one of the defining features of the Agro Atellano.
The structure of the festival remains the same: floats prepared by local associations, dozens of musicians per float, barrels and vats struck in rhythm along the city's main arteries, and traditional a cappella songs. At the moment, however, neither the precise dates nor the poster with the detailed program have been published.
Orta di Atella is located in the Agro Atellano area, north of Naples and south of the provincial capital, Caserta. By car, it is easily reached via the Asse Mediano and the SS 7 bis road. By train, the reference stations are Aversa and Frattamaggiore, which are connected to the town by local bus lines.
Access to the parade is free: the floats travel along public streets in the center, and the spectacle can be viewed from the roadside.
