The masked festival of the hamlet of Borzano, in Albinea
The Borzano Carnival is the masked festival that, every winter, enlivens the small hamlet of Borzano, in the Municipality of Albinea, at the foot of the first Reggio Emilia hills in the province of Reggio Emilia. Far from the great historical carnivals of Emilia-Romagna, it is an event with an authentic and popular flavour, organised by the parish community and designed particularly for the children and families of the village.
The heart of the event is the oratory square, on Via Ariosto, behind the parish church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Here, in the early afternoon, a day of celebration begins with games for all ages, music, and cheer. The colourful masks of the children mingle with the food stalls, where traditional Reggio Emilia and Carnival specialities are not to be missed.
The most anticipated moment is the parade that crosses the centre of Borzano along Via Ariosto and Via Orsi. Accompanying the masked procession are the flag-wavers and musicians "Maestà della Battaglia" of Quattro Castella, a historical group from the Reggio Emilia area that brings the swirl of flags and the rhythm of drums to the streets, offering a spectacle reminiscent of medieval re-enactments in the nearby Matildic hills.
During the afternoon, the stalls offer seasonal specialities: fried gnocco and cured meats, erbazzone, intrigoni, and Carnival sweets, accompanied by mulled wine, cocktails, and snacks. It's an opportunity to gather with fellow villagers and taste the specialities that tell the story of the peasant cuisine of the Reggio Emilia Apennines.
The Borzano Carnival also has a charitable soul: the proceeds from the day are donated to the parish and the San Giovanni Bosco Children's Centre in Borzano, to support the community's activities. A small but significant event that, year after year, renews the spirit of sharing in this corner of Emilia.
The 2026 edition of the Borzano Carnival was held on Sunday, February 15, starting at 3 PM at the oratory square at Via Ariosto 1, behind the parish church of Borzano, in Albinea.
The afternoon offered games for all ages, music, and entertainment, along with food stalls serving fried gnocco and cured meats, erbazzone, intrigoni, cakes, mulled wine, cocktails, and snacks. At 4 PM, the parade set off along Via Ariosto and Via Orsi, animated by the flag-wavers and musicians "Maestà della Battaglia" of Quattro Castella. As tradition dictates, the proceeds were donated to the parish and the San Giovanni Bosco Children's Centre of Borzano.
