Folk music returns to Karneid Castle

Every autumn, Karneid Castle (known in German as Burg Karneid) opens its ancient halls and courtyards for a day dedicated to Volksmusik, the traditional folk music of South Tyrol. The event takes place in Cornedo all'Isarco/Karneid, in the Province of Bolzano, at the gateway to the Eggental (Val d'Ega), one of the most scenic villages in Trentino-Alto Adige.

The manor, whose origins date back to around 1200 with the noble Greifenstein family, provides a unique backdrop for listening to choirs, brass ensembles, and Stubenmusik groups that bring South Tyrolean musical tradition to life. Amidst the crenelated walls, walkways, and the frescoed chapel dedicated to Saint Anne, the folk music creates an intimate and authentic atmosphere, highly cherished by those seeking the region's cultural roots.

What is South Tyrolean Volksmusik?

Volksmusik is the heart of the German-speaking musical culture of South Tyrol: polyphonic singing, diatonic accordions (Harmonika), zithers, alpine harps, and brass instruments intertwine in melodies passed down from generation to generation. At Karneid Castle, this heritage comes to life in a context that blends music, history, and landscape, set against the backdrop of the Dolomites and the Isarco Valley.

A tradition-steeped event

The initiative is promoted as part of the cultural activities of the Municipality of Cornedo all'Isarco, which manages the castle as a cultural institution. The afternoon of music is often accompanied by the opportunity to visit the manor, an architectural jewel accessible only by reservation, featuring its knights' halls and exquisite Romanesque frescoes.
