Six days of faith, tradition, and live music in the heart of Bitonto
The Bitonto Patronal Feast in honor of Maria SS. Immacolata is the most awaited event of the year for this city in the province of Bari, Apulia. Every late May, the historic center and the main squares of the Municipality of Bitonto light up with illuminations and come alive with processions, bands, shows, and major concerts dedicated to the city's patron saint, the Immaculate Conception.
It is a celebration that unites the entire community: alongside religious rites, a rich secular program unfolds, featuring free concerts in Piazza Marconi, performances by brass bands, street artists, and activities designed for families and children. Popular faith and local festivities coexist in a balance typical of the great patronal feasts of Southern Italy.
The culmination is May 26th, the day dedicated to the patron saint. The day begins at dawn with the evocative Dawn Mass celebrated in the square, accompanied by "U Gardรฌdde," the traditional musical awakening performed by the local Bassa Banda. This is followed by solemn masses in the Cathedral and, in the afternoon, the solemn procession of the statue of Maria SS. Immacolata through the city streets, accompanied by brass bands and the Bitonto Philharmonic.
The secular side of the festival takes place primarily in Piazza Marconi, the stage for evening free concerts that alternate between bands, orchestras, and Italian music artists each year. In recent years, the lineup has hosted prominent names from the national scene, alongside local ensembles such as the "Tommaso Traetta" City Band and the "Davide Delle Cese" Wind Orchestra.
The Bitonto festival is also known for the spectacular illuminations that outline the historic center, circus and street performances in the alleys, the "Giรฒ Madonnari" initiative for children, and the traditional hot air balloon launch. It is a heritage of popular traditions passed down from generation to generation, a testament to the deep bond between Bitonto and its patron saint. For those visiting Apulia in late May, the Patronal Feast is the perfect opportunity to discover one of the most beautiful historic centers in the province of Bari, famous for its Romanesque Cathedral and extra virgin olive oil production.
The 2026 edition of the Bitonto Patronal Feast in honor of Maria SS. Immacolata took place from Friday, May 22nd to Wednesday, May 27th, 2026, enlivening the city's historic center and squares with a program rich in religious and secular events.
The program alternated liturgical rites, brass band concerts, circus performances, and major free evening concerts in Piazza Marconi. The highlight was Tuesday, May 26th, with the dawn mass in Piazza XXVI Maggio and the solemn procession of the statue of the Immaculate Conception through the city streets.
The festivities take place in the historic center of Bitonto and the main city squares. The major evening concerts are held in Piazza Marconi, while religious rites involve the Cathedral and the Basilica of the Santi Medici.
Bitonto is about 18 km from Bari. By car, it can be reached via the SS96 or SS16. By train, it is connected to Bari via the Ferrovie del Nord Barese (FNB) line. Bari-Palese Airport is approximately 15 km away.
Concerts in Piazza Marconi and all scheduled events are free of charge.
