Two thousand square metres of wood, a hundred performers, and ancient crafts in the heart of the Sele Plain
The Bellizzi Living Nativity is one of the most popular Christmas events in the province of Salerno. Every year, between late December and early January, the Via Roma area is transformed into a true village: approximately 2,000 square metres built entirely of wood, with alleys, workshops, inns, and courtyards that visitors explore on foot, following a path that leads to the Nativity stable.
The setup is far more than a simple backdrop. The structures are assembled and expanded season after season by volunteers from the Associazione Presepe Vivente Bellizzi APS, who take care of every detail: from the wooden roofs to the work tools, from the costumes to the fires lit along the route. It is this artisanal attention to detail, combined with the number of participants, that has made the Bellizzi nativity a landmark in the Campania region.
Visitors traverse two intertwined narrative layers. On one hand, the scenes from the sacred texts, recounting the anticipation and birth of Jesus; on the other, the daily life of a village from two thousand years ago, reconstructed through stations dedicated to ancient trades. Among the workshops visitors encounter along the path:
Around one hundred performers, almost all locals, bring the entire route to life: children, young people, and adults who, for a few evenings a year, take on the roles of villagers. The formula works: local sources report over two thousand visitors per evening, with total attendance in 2024 exceeding ten thousand people.
The event was born in 2015 through the initiative of the local association and, over a decade, has grown into one of the most visited representations in the area. Since Christmas 2022, the Bellizzi Living Nativity has been a staple in regional guides dedicated to the Christmas season. The 2025/26 season marked its tenth edition.
The event is part of the «Natale in Città » (Christmas in the City) programme promoted by the Municipality of Bellizzi and is supported by the Campania Region. This highlights the nature of the initiative: not a manufactured tourist product, but a community project involving families, the parish, schools, and local associations, which has attracted audiences from neighbouring provinces over the years.
Bellizzi is one of the youngest municipalities in Campania: established in 1990 after separating from Montecorvino Rovella and Montecorvino Pugliano, it stretches across the Sele Plain, just a few kilometres from Salerno and the coast. It is a land of intensive agriculture and typical products, from buffalo mozzarella to vegetables, and is located a short distance from the region's major cultural attractions, from the Paestum Archaeological Park to the Amalfi Coast. Visiting the living nativity on a winter evening means connecting with the most authentic and daily dimension of this corner of Campania.
Opening times are concentrated in the evenings between late December and Epiphany, from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Admission is free and no booking is required: simply arrive, enter, and explore the route at your own pace. It is an experience particularly suited to families with children, who can observe up close gestures and crafts that have otherwise disappeared.
The Bellizzi Living Nativity completed its tenth edition in the first days of 2026, with openings on 4 and 6 January, the day of Epiphany. The event, set up on Via Roma in the Municipality of Bellizzi (province of Salerno, Campania), remained open from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM, with free admission throughout.
Even during these final evenings, the route of approximately 2,000 square metres built entirely of wood was brought to life by a hundred performers from the Associazione Presepe Vivente Bellizzi APS. The initiative was part of the «Natale in Città » programme of the Municipality and supported by the Campania Region.
Some local sources indicated continuous opening from 4 to 6 January 2026.
The living nativity is set up on Via Roma, in Bellizzi (SA), in the 2,000-square-metre wooden area. Some sources indicate number 254, others the church square at number 284: the site is clearly signposted along the town's main axis.
Bellizzi is located in the Sele Plain, a few kilometres from Salerno. By car, it can be reached via the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway (Pontecagnano exit) and the SS18 Tirrena Inferiore road. The Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi Airport in Pontecagnano is just a few minutes away.
Free parking is available on Via Pescara, at the Piazza Mercato in Bellizzi.
Open from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM on scheduled evenings. Free admission.
The route is outdoors and takes place in the evening: warm clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended. On busier evenings, it is advisable to arrive early, as the flow of visitors is concentrated in the first hour of opening.
