Bavarian beers, cuisine, and music at the foot of the Partenio mountains
Some towns come alive in summer for a traditional festival, while others choose a different path. Pietrastornina, a village of just over 1,400 inhabitants perched 513 meters high on the Partenio slopes in the province of Avellino, has chosen beer. For a few years now, the Piazzale Salvatore Iermano has transformed for two nights into a small open-air Festhalle: long communal tables, beer taps, Bavarian-style signs, and a lively crowd that gathers as the sun sets behind the mountains.
The name says it all: Beer Town. It is a simple, almost elementary formula, but it works because it is a grassroots initiative—organized by the Youth Forum with the patronage and support of the Municipality of Pietrastornina—and because in a village of this size, two nights of celebration truly change the community's rhythm.
The common thread of the event is Bavarian beer, complemented by craft productions. This is not a fair with dozens of exhibitors, but a curated selection: a few labels, served on tap, and explained to those who ask. In the 2026 summer edition, the featured guest was the German brewery Giesinger Bräu, a historic institution from the Giesing district in Munich, which brought some of its most acclaimed labels to Pietrastornina.
For those not familiar with the brewing world, it is a relaxed way to explore classic German styles—thirst-quenching lagers, malty ambers, and wheat beers—without the pretension of a formal tasting. You drink while seated, chat, and head back to the bar.
The food stalls are not just an afterthought. The itinerary proposed by the organizers is built around pairings: dishes chosen to enhance the characteristics of the beers on offer, ranging from Bavarian-inspired specialties—pretzels, bratwurst, and grilled sausages have been staples since the first edition—to local Irpinian cuisine.
Every evening has its own soundtrack. The first edition in November 2024 featured live concerts at 8:00 PM and DJ sets starting at 10:00 PM; the 2026 edition maintained this structure, announcing special guests Berlino84 and Nova. The music is designed to accompany the party rather than take center stage: it plays while you eat and drink, and the square remains lively until late at night.
Beer Town is one of those cases where youth initiative becomes a permanent fixture on the municipal calendar. The Pietrastornina Youth Forum conceived the first edition in 2024, placing it during the long All Saints' weekend with a clear Oktoberfest theme: traditional decorations, a beer hall atmosphere, and even a raffle with themed gadgets. In 2026, the event was moved to July, taking advantage of the cool evenings in the Irpinian mountains, with the support of the Province of Avellino through the Sistema Irpinia circuit.
Pietrastornina stretches along a rocky ridge overlooking the Sabato Valley, in that part of inland Campania where Irpinia fades into the Sannio and Valle Caudina areas. The village preserves the remains of the tower and the ancient fortified settlement that gave it its name, and it maintains a close relationship with the Partenio Regional Park: chestnut forests, trails, and fresh air. The patron saint is Saint Blaise, celebrated on February 3rd.
Those arriving for Beer Town will find much more than just two nights of beer: a mountain village about twenty kilometers from Avellino, easy to reach for an evening out, and just off the beaten path enough to remain uncrowded by mass tourism.
The event lasts two nights and begins with the opening of the stands at 7:00 PM. The best time to arrive is around 8:00 PM, when the live music starts and the square is full but not yet crowded. Those who want to dine at a leisurely pace should arrive early; those interested in the DJ sets can arrive later and stay until closing. In the mountains, even in July, a sweatshirt is almost always needed in the evening.
After its autumn debut in 2024, the event promoted by the Municipality of Pietrastornina and the Youth Forum returns in a new guise: two evenings in the height of summer, Friday, July 24 and Saturday, July 25, 2026, with the Piazzale Salvatore Iermano transformed into a meeting point for enthusiasts, curious visitors, and families.
Bavarian beers remain the absolute stars, at the center of a gastronomic itinerary built to enhance their characteristics and pairings with the specialties offered by the stalls. The prestigious guest is the Munich-based brewery Giesinger Bräu, present with a selection of its labels. On the musical front, the organizers have announced special guests Berlino84 and Nova.
The initiative is part of the circuit of events supported by the Province of Avellino through Sistema Irpinia, which has included it in the Irpinian summer calendar alongside festivals and concerts in late July.
The organizers have not released a detailed schedule of performances: the indicated times are those communicated for the opening of the stands.
Piazzale Salvatore Iermano, 4 — 83015 Pietrastornina (AV), Campania. The food stalls and beer taps are set up directly in the square, outdoors.
By car: Pietrastornina is about twenty kilometers from Avellino and just under an hour from Naples; it is reached via the provincial roads connecting the Valle Caudina to the Partenio area. This is the most practical option, as there is no train station in the village.
Parking: You can park in the town center areas near the square. On festival nights, it is best to arrive early or leave the car slightly further down the hill and walk up.
Stands open every evening at 7:00 PM; the evening continues with live music and DJ sets until late at night.
No admission fee has been announced: you enter the square and pay for what you consume directly at the stalls, choosing from draft beers and food options.
You are at an altitude of 513 meters: after sunset, the temperature drops, so it is best to bring a sweatshirt even in the middle of summer. For those driving, remember that the festival revolves around beer—it is best to organize your group accordingly.
