Some villages carry the memory of great historical figures within their very stones and names. Montereale, a town in the Upper Aterno Valley in the province of L'Aquila, is one such place: here, the Historical Re-enactment and Chivalric Joust of Margaret of Austria brings the town center back to the splendor of the 16th century every year, with period costumes, performers, flag-wavers, and a captivating equestrian joust that brings the squares and alleys to life.
The illegitimate daughter of Emperor Charles V, Margaret of Austria (1522-1586) served as the Duchess of Parma and Piacenza and Governor of the Abruzzo region. Between 1569 and 1572, she resided in Montereale as its lady, and tradition remembers her as a woman of great political intelligence and cultural sensitivity, known for her care for widows and orphans. That era was one of the most brilliant periods in the history of the Upper Aterno; the re-enactment pays homage to this memory, transforming the bond between the territory and its duchess into a collective celebration.
The heart of the event is the historical pageant that winds through the historic center of Montereale: nobles, ladies, men-at-arms, and representatives of the local districts parade in Renaissance attire, accompanied by flag-wavers and musicians. Alongside the procession is the chivalric joust, an equestrian challenge that has evolved over the years into a spectacle reminiscent of the Quintana Joust, serving as the most anticipated moment of the day. Surrounding the main events are period settings and performers who reconstruct the daily life of the 16th-century court and village.
The re-enactment often takes place during the weekend of the Spiedino Festival, a gastronomic event that draws visitors from across the region. Once the historical festivities conclude, food stalls offer traditional dishes from the Upper Aterno Valley, ranging from skewers (spiedini) to local mountain specialties, creating an evening that perfectly balances entertainment and conviviality.
The event extends beyond mere celebration: in recent years, it has been accompanied by a cultural conference hosted in the prestigious Palazzo Farnese, focusing on the figure of Margaret of Austria and the role of culture in social cohesion and the revival of inland territories. As part of the celebrations for L'Aquila's designation as the Italian Capital of Culture 2026, initiatives are underway to establish a museum dedicated to the duchess right here in Montereale, further strengthening the link between the village and its history.
For Montereale and the entire province of L'Aquila, the Margaret of Austria Re-enactment is much more than a costume party: it is a way to tell the story of inland Abruzzo, its history, and its resilience despite depopulation and the scars of the earthquake. It is an appointment worth experiencing to discover an authentic village and a fascinating chapter of the Abruzzo Renaissance.
The re-enactment dedicated to Margaret of Austria is a recurring summer event in the historic center of Montereale (AQ), featuring a costumed pageant, a chivalric joust, and Renaissance settings. At the moment, the dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: the event usually takes place at the end of August. 2026 is also the year in which L'Aquila is the Italian Capital of Culture, a context that could bring further prominence to the celebrations related to the duchess. The detailed program will be published by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
The re-enactment takes place in the historic center of Montereale (AQ), postcode 67015, in the Abruzzo region, within the Upper Aterno Valley. The associated cultural conference is held at Palazzo Farnese.
Montereale can be reached by car from L'Aquila along the SS 260 road in the direction of Amatrice/Rieti. The nearest train station is L'Aquila, from where you can continue by bus or private vehicle.
The event is traditionally held in the summer, during the last weekend of August, often in conjunction with the Spiedino Festival. We recommend checking dates and programs on the official channels of the Municipality of Montereale and the Pro Loco.
The event takes place in the public spaces of the historic center and is free to attend.
