A local carnival in the heart of Lunigiana, featuring parade floats, costumes, and festive cheer.
In the heart of Lunigiana, in the far north of Tuscany, the village of Barbarasco in the Municipality of Tresana (Province of Massa-Carrara) dresses up for its Carnival every year. It is one of those events deeply rooted in the local community: a simple and genuine gathering, far from the large-scale tourist parades but rich in local participation, where the residents of the various hamlets build the floats and bring the festival to life.
The heart of the event is the parade of allegorical floats, created by the various local hamlets, which travel noisily and joyfully through the village streets. A cloud of confetti and streamers accompanies the passage of the floats, along with whimsical masks and plenty of high-spirited euphoria. It is a festival that involves both young and old, with children being the true stars of the day.
In recent years, the focus of the festival has shifted to the Parco Fiera of Barbarasco, a large municipal green area of over 11,000 square meters nestled among chestnut trees, equipped with a covered structure, a fountain, and playgrounds for the little ones. Here, the Carnival is enriched with music, games, and entertainment, turning into an afternoon of celebration for the whole family.
The Barbarasco Carnival is organized by the Municipality of Tresana together with the Le mie Radici Association and numerous local entities: the Pro Loco Tresana, the Photo Amateur Group, the Civil Protection, AVIS, local sports clubs, and schools. It is precisely this spirit of collaboration that makes the festival so heartfelt: an authentic, popular Carnival with free admission, a living expression of the traditions of Lunigiana.
The 2026 Barbarasco Carnival was held on Sunday, February 15, starting at 2:00 PM at the Parco Fiera of Barbarasco, in the Municipality of Tresana (MS). The day featured music, games, and entertainment for children in a popular, festive atmosphere with free admission, organized by the municipality together with the Le mie Radici Association and local organizations.
