The Nativity comes to life among the alleys and caves of Lunigiana
The Equi Terme Living Nativity is one of the most evocative and long-standing Christmas events in Tuscany. It takes place in the hamlet of Equi Terme, a small village nestled among rivers, waterfalls, and natural caves in the municipality of Fivizzano, in the province of Massa-Carrara, in the heart of Lunigiana. Since 1986, the Equi Terme Living Nativity Association has organized this annual re-enactment, which draws thousands of visitors from across the region and beyond.
The route winds along the alleys and courtyards of the ancient village, illuminated by the warm glow of torches. Along the 40-60 minute path, you will encounter over 150 volunteer performers animating about thirty fixed stations: shepherds and Magi, Roman legionnaires, blacksmiths and stonemasons, weavers and cobblers, knife grinders and carpenters. To make the atmosphere even more authentic, there are live animalsโgoats, sheep, geese, chickens, birds of prey, and horsesโaccompanied by the sound of bagpipes.
The journey concludes in the magical setting of the entrance to the Equi Caves, where the Nativity is depicted with Mary, Joseph, and the Baby Jesus, the ox, and the donkey, all bathed in the warm light of torches. On the evenings of the event, the caves remain open to the public for guided night tours: from the small terrace, 26 meters high, you can admire the village illuminated by torches.
The Equi Terme event is not just a simple performance, but a great community celebration involving most of the residents of the village and the surrounding area. The attention to set design, the reconstruction of traditional trades, and the natural setting among the rocks of Lunigiana make this nativity an emotional and identity-defining experience that blends spirituality, folk culture, and landscape. Along the route, there are food stalls with typical local products to warm you up on cold winter evenings.
The 36th edition of the Equi Terme Living Nativity is scheduled for December 25, 26, and 27, 2026. The village settings, prepared since autumn by the association's volunteers, will once again feature the usual route through torch-lit alleys, thirty stations showcasing period trades, and the representation of the Nativity at the entrance to the Equi Caves. The opening of the caves for guided night tours during the event evenings is confirmed.
