The candlelit luminara in the thermal heart of San Giuliano
BagniInLuce is the luminara festival with which the municipality of San Giuliano Terme, located in the province of Pisa in the heart of Tuscany, celebrates its patron saint, San Bartolomeo. Every year, around August 24th, the thermal village at the foot of Monte Pisano turns off its artificial lights and relies on the warm glow of thousands of candles, offering residents and visitors one of the most poetic evenings of the summer.
The heart of the festival is the installation of the so-called biancherie: white-painted wooden structures covered in candles, arranged along the windows and profiles of the historic center's buildings. Approximately four thousand flames replace electric lighting and reshape the town, illuminating the three bridges, the facade of the thermal palace, and even the small boats gliding on the waters of the Mulino. The result is a suspended landscape where 19th-century thermal architecture dialogues with the flickering reflection of the candles.
BagniInLuce originated as a patronal feast and retains strong religious roots: in the late afternoon, a solemn mass dedicated to San Bartolomeo is celebrated at the church of Santi Ranieri e Luigi Gonzaga. The popular dimension of the event develops around this liturgical moment, built over the years through the voluntary contribution of dozens of citizens and animated today by the Pro Loco of San Giuliano Terme. It is a participatory event, designed as a community occasion rather than a simple show.
Throughout the evening, until late at night, the center comes alive with an arts and crafts market under the stars, stalls featuring local products, street bands, music, theater, dance, and entertainment for children. Recent editions have included traditional games at Parco dei Pini, themed dance evenings, and moments dedicated to families, in a convivial atmosphere that attracts visitors from across the province of Pisa.
Closing the festival, around 9:30 PM, is the pyrotechnic show set up in front of the thermal baths: a scenic finale that reflects in the water and the candles. Some editions have featured low-noise fireworks, designed to avoid disturbing animals and to provide a gentler conclusion to the evening. BagniInLuce thus remains a defining event for San Giuliano Terme, capable of uniting devotion, tradition, and wonder in a single night of light.
For 2026, the appointment with the San Giuliano Terme luminara is set for Monday, August 24, the feast of San Bartolomeo. As per tradition, the evening should include a solemn mass in the late afternoon, the lighting of candles on the historic center's frames, the craft market under the stars, music, and street performances, culminating in the usual pyrotechnic show in front of the thermal establishment.
The date is confirmed by the Terre di Pisa tourism circuit; the full program, including the line-up and activities, will be announced by the Pro Loco and the Municipality of San Giuliano Terme closer to the event.
San Giuliano Terme is located a few kilometers north of Pisa. By car, it can be reached via the SS12 dell'Abetone e del Brennero; by train, the San Giuliano Terme station is on the Pisa–Lucca line, with frequent connections from Pisa Centrale station. The reference airport is Pisa–Galileo Galilei.
The event takes place in the historic center and admission is free. During the evening, the central streets are closed to traffic: it is advisable to park in areas outside the center and reach the squares on foot. We recommend arriving at sunset to catch the lighting of the candles and staying until the evening fireworks.
