A popular festival in the municipal park of Battipaglia

The Baccalà Festival is one of the gastronomic highlights that brighten the end of summer in Battipaglia, a city in the province of Salerno, in the heart of the Sele Plain, Campania. The event takes place in the municipal park on Via Clarizia, the main green space in the city center, which for a few evenings turns into a large open-air dining room with tables, a field kitchen, and a space reserved for music.

The event is organized by the Circolo Teatrale Il Castelluccio, a local association long active in promoting cultural and popular initiatives in the city, ranging from Carnival to theater festivals. The festival is part of the summer calendar that the Municipality of Battipaglia hosts in the municipal park to animate public spaces and offer social opportunities to citizens.

Baccalà, the iconic dish of peasant cuisine

Baccalà—cod preserved in salt and then desalted over a long period—is one of the most deeply rooted products in the popular cuisine of Southern Italy. Arriving centuries ago from Northern seas via trade routes, it became a daily ingredient precisely because it could be stored for a long time and was inexpensive: a pantry staple that Campanian families learned to cook in dozens of different ways, from frying to stewing with cherry tomatoes and olives, to preparations for vigils and feast days.

Dedicating a multi-day event to it means celebrating a domestic tradition even before a restaurant dish: it is home cooking brought to the public square, with the same recipes passed down through generations of the Sele Plain.

At the table: how the festival works

The format is the classic one of Campanian food festivals: you order at the counter, pick up your food, and sit at the tables set up under the trees of the park. The menu offered in recent editions includes:

• traditional first courses;
• fish dishes with baccalà as the absolute star, alongside meat alternatives;
• desserts and fresh seasonal fruit;
• drinks served upon request;
• takeaway service for those who prefer to bring the dishes home.

Service is traditionally in the evening, with the addition of some lunch openings on holidays when the turnout requires it.

Music and atmosphere on August evenings

Alongside the food, the Baccalà Festival reserves space for live music: short sets that accompany dinner and brighten the warm late-August evenings, in a deliberately simple and accessible setting. The environment of the municipal park, with its tree-lined avenues and proximity to the center, makes the event particularly suitable for families and those who want to spend an evening outdoors without leaving the city.

A summer of events in the municipal park

The festival is not an isolated event: the municipal park of Battipaglia hosts a full calendar in August. In 2025, the Baccalà Festival took place immediately after the Tipico Battipagliese festival and was followed by the Battipaglia Beach Village and, in September, the Talenti Festival. In 2026, the calendar also starts with Tipico Battipagliese, announced from August 7th to 16th, while official dates for the Baccalà Festival have not yet been released.

Battipaglia and the Sele Plain

With its neighborhoods grown around agriculture and processing industries, Battipaglia is one of the most populous municipalities in the province of Salerno and the nerve center of the Sele Plain, a land of buffalo mozzarella, vegetables, and fruit. The symbol of the city is Il Castelluccio, the ancient building from which the association that organizes the festival takes its name.

The location is very convenient: Battipaglia is an important railway junction on the Tyrrhenian line and is located a few kilometers from the archaeological sites of Paestum, the Amalfi Coast, and Cilento. A gastronomic stop like this can therefore become the ideal conclusion to a day of visiting the Salerno area.

What we know about the 2026 edition

At the moment, there are no official announcements regarding the dates of the 2026 Baccalà Festival: the last documented edition was held from August 20-25, 2025. It is advisable to keep an eye on the channels of the Municipality of Battipaglia, the local press, and the pages of the Circolo Teatrale Il Castelluccio, which usually announce the program a few days before opening.
