The Avola celebration honoring the Pizzuta almond and the culinary treasures of the Val di Noto

The Avola Almond Festival is one of the most cherished events of the Avola summer. Held in the historic center of Avola, in the province of Syracuse, it celebrates the product that has made this baroque city famous worldwide: the Avola almond. The event typically enlivens Piazza Santa Venera, where local producers and artisans set up stalls, creating a festive atmosphere that draws both locals and visitors.
The Avola almond is grown in three historic varieties—Pizzuta, Fascionello, and Romana—selected in the 19th century by local botanist Giuseppe Bianca, author of the famous Manual of Almond Cultivation in Sicily (1872). Today, these cultivars are protected by the «Mandorla di Noto» Slow Food Presidium and represent one of the finest expressions of fruit farming in the Val di Noto. Their premium quality has long been a staple of the island's finest pastry making.
During the festival, stalls offer numerous almond-based delicacies:
Alongside the star of the show, two other local treasures from the Syracuse area are featured: Nero d'Avola wine, which takes its name from this very land, and the Syracuse PGI lemon. It is a culinary journey that highlights the food identity of southeastern Sicily.
The festival is part of the Estate Avolese (Avola Summer) calendar, which is packed with concerts, shows, and entertainment. Tastings in the square are often accompanied by live music and cultural events throughout the city center, making for a convivial evening for the whole family. Visiting the Almond Festival is a wonderful way to discover Avola and its rural heritage in one of the most fascinating locations in the province of Syracuse.
The 2026 edition of the Avola Almond Festival does not yet have an official date. The event, dedicated to the almonds of the Val di Noto and the culinary excellence of the Syracuse region, is expected to take place as usual during the summer. We recommend checking the Municipality of Avola's official channels for updates on dates and the program.
