The Falvaterra Wine Competition

In the small medieval village of Falvaterra, in the province of Frosinone, the Wine Competition has become a staple of the Ciociaria autumn. Every year, during the week of St. Martin—the saint traditionally associated with new wine—the community gathers in Piazza Umberto I for an evening dedicated to the oenological excellence produced within the municipality.

A contest with two juries

The heart of the event is the challenge between the competing wines. Two complementary juries evaluate them. The first is a panel of industry experts, tasked with awarding prizes for the best local wine and the best Falvaterra producer. The second is the popular jury: all attendees can taste the competing wines for free and cast their vote, in a participatory ritual that involves both locals and visitors.

Participation is open to local producers who bring their bottles to be put to the test: it is an opportunity to showcase the work of small family-run wineries and promote the traditional grape varieties of the area.

The accompanying food festival

The competition is paired with a gastronomic festival curated by Bottega Coquinaria, the village restaurant. On the menu are the authentic flavors of local cuisine: bread soup, a humble and iconic dish of the peasant tradition, and charcoal-grilled arrosticini. This pairing completes the celebration, turning the evening into a convivial moment centered around good food and fine wine.
