Aurer Maschgra: The Carnival of Ora in Bassa Atesina

The Aurer Maschgra is the traditional carnival celebration of the municipality of Ora (known as Auer in German), a picturesque village in the Bassa Atesina region along the Wine Road in the province of Bolzano, in the heart of Trentino-Alto Adige. The local South Tyrolean term Maschgra refers to the act of masking or dressing up, which gives its name to one of the most beloved and well-attended masquerade events south of Bolzano.

The Carneval Aurora Association

The Aurer Maschgra is brought to life by the Carneval Aurora association and its council of fools (the Elferrat), who oversee the organization of the festivities and the parade each year. In the months leading up to the event, the group prepares the floats and selects the themes for the procession, keeping a popular tradition deeply rooted in the village's identity and Tyrolean carnival culture alive.

The Festival Program

The event spans several days during the carnival season. On Fat Thursday, the main square of Ora comes alive in the morning with the Frühschoppen, an aperitif accompanied by live music, while the afternoon is dedicated to entertainment and games for children with a themed party. Carnival Sunday is the highlight: following the morning Frühschoppen and children's activities, the grand masquerade parade kicks off in the early afternoon, departing from the train station and marching through the streets of the center to the square.
