Piedmont's nomadic performing arts festival arrives at the Teatro Balbo
Attraverso Festival is one of Piedmont's most significant nomadic cultural projects: a travelling festival that weaves together theatre, comedy, music, and talks every summer, bringing big names from the national scene to squares, castles, and theatres across the UNESCO-listed hills of Langhe, Roero, and Monferrato. Among the towns hosting the festival in the province of Asti is Canelli, a city synonymous with Spumante and Asti DOCG, which welcomes the event within the setting of its 19th-century jewel, the Teatro Balbo.
Reaching its 11th edition in 2026, Attraverso Festival spans over 200 kilometres and involves nearly thirty municipalities across the provinces of Asti, Alessandria, and Cuneo. The artistic direction is led by Paola Farinetti and Simona Ressico, with organisation by Hiroshima Mon Amour and Produzioni Fuorivia. The festival has made the territory its stage: every performance is designed to engage with its host location, from panoramic viewpoints to historic theatres, as well as wine cellars and UNESCO-recognised vineyard landscapes.
In Canelli, the festival events are held at the Teatro Balbo, located in the historic centre just a few steps from the famous Underground Cathedrals carved into the tuff. The intimate venue, with its excellent acoustics, is the ideal choice for the spoken-word and comedy shows that characterise the Canelli programme, typically scheduled between late summer and early September. Over the years, the stage has hosted leading figures of Italian theatre and entertainment.
Attending an Attraverso Festival show in Canelli means combining the national stage with the pleasure of discovering one of Italy's wine capitals. The Canelli stop is an opportunity to experience this Monferrato town beyond its winemaking tradition, in an evening that focuses on culture, dialogue, and meeting the audience.
The 11th edition of Attraverso Festival enlivens the summer of 2026 with over forty events distributed across nearly thirty municipalities in the provinces of Asti, Alessandria, and Cuneo. In Canelli, in the Asti Monferrato, the festival stops at the Teatro Balbo with a nationally acclaimed event, in line with the festival's dedication to spoken-word theatre and authorial comedy.
The artistic direction of Paola Farinetti and Simona Ressico confirms the nomadic festival formula: bringing great protagonists of the Italian scene to iconic locations within the UNESCO-listed vineyard landscape, enhancing historic theatres and local squares.
The show, written by Luca Bizzarri and Ugo Ripamonti, stems from the theatrical evolution of the famous podcast «Non hanno un amico». With sharp satire and amused reflection, Bizzarri recounts the contradictions of contemporary political communication, social phenomena, and the oddities of our time, in a mirror that is often merciless but never banal. As part of the festival, the same show also visits the towns of Casale Monferrato and Savigliano.
Presale tickets for the 2026 edition are available from February 19, 2026, on the Mailticket platform and the official festival website.
Luca Bizzarri with his new show «Non hanno un amico dubbio», based on the highly successful podcast of the same name: comedy and authorial satire at the Teatro Balbo in Canelli.
The Teatro Balbo is located in the historic centre of Canelli (AT). By car, Canelli can be reached via the A33 Asti-Cuneo motorway (Castagnito-Alba exit) or the A21 (Asti Est exit), continuing along the main road towards the Belbo Valley. By train, the Canelli station is served by the Asti-Acqui Terme-Genoa line.
Tickets for the Canelli shows can be purchased online via the Mailticket platform and on the official festival website. Advance booking is recommended for the most popular events, which often sell out.
Combine your evening at the theatre with a visit to the Underground Cathedrals of Canelli and a tasting of Asti Spumante DOCG at the city's historic sparkling wine houses.
