The music and street performers festival at Casale di Teverolaccio
The Atella Sound Circus is the music and street arts festival that brings Succivo, a town in the province of Caserta, Campania, to life every June. The setting is one of the most evocative in the northern Caserta area: the Casale di Teverolaccio, an ancient fortified rural complex that fills up for three days with acrobats, jugglers, fire-eaters, clowns, and musical stages. Admission is completely free, and the gates open in the late afternoon, as the heat of the Campanian plains begins to fade.
The Casale, located on Via XXIV Maggio, is the iconic monument of Succivo and is used by the festival as a complex performance space where every area has a different function. The Orti (gardens) host street performer acts that rotate continuously across multiple spots; the Aia (threshing floor) houses the food area; the Corte (courtyard) is the heart of the evening, featuring live concerts and the bar; and the mercatini (markets) of artistic crafts wind along the pathways. The audience moves freely, and this multi-focal structure is what makes the festival vibrant even when there isn't a big name on stage.
The musical programming is intentionally eclectic and curious: over the years, the festival has brought world music, afrobeat, Balkan sounds, funk, jazz, and Mediterranean punk to Succivo, alternating between local Campanian groups and international acts. The concerts are concentrated in the late evening, after the circus shows have filled the afternoon and early evening. It is a choice that gives the festival a precise rhythm: first families and children, then the concert-going crowd.
The true hallmark of the Atella Sound Circus remains contemporary street circus. Each edition brings together a dozen or more companies and solo performers, often from Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and other European countries, alongside Italian artists. Acrobatics, juggling, clowning, fire-eating, bubble art, and comedy theater follow one another seamlessly in a format that requires no tickets, reservations, or assigned seating: you stop in front of an artist, watch, applaud, and move on.
Since its first editions, the organization, managed by the Associazione Artenova, has linked the festival to an explicit social discourse. The underlying idea, reiterated by the organizers, is that a child who learns to be amazed by a juggler or moved by live music carries with them a seed of conscious citizenship. Hence the constant attention to themes of hospitality, inclusion, and rights, with dedicated days, exhibitions, and the active participation of people hosted in local integration projects. The festival takes place under the patronage of the Municipality of Succivo and with the support of organizations such as ARCI and the Ministry of Culture.
The Atella Sound Circus is designed to be enjoyed as a family. Alongside the shows, there are playful and creative workshops, scenic installations, games, and wellness activities. The food area offers local specialties alongside vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options, while the artisan market gives space to small local producers and artists.
The festival's name recalls the ancient Atella, an Oscan city that stood in the area now shared between Succivo, Sant'Arpino, Orta di Atella, and Frattaminore. Atella was famous in the Roman world for the fabulae Atellanae, popular farces with fixed masks that are considered one of the roots of Italian comic theater and, later, the Commedia dell'Arte. Bringing clowns, jugglers, and street theater back to this territory is therefore not just an entertainment choice: it is a way to reconnect a thread that starts from very far away.
The festival is usually held on the weekend around June 20th, coinciding with World Refugee Day. The evenings begin in the late afternoon and continue until night. Those who want to see the street performers without the crowds can arrive at opening time; those aiming for the concerts can show up around 9:00 PM. In both cases, no ticket is required.
The festival returned to the Casale di Teverolaccio in Succivo, in the province of Caserta, from June 19 to 21, 2026, coinciding with the reopening of the restored historic courtyard to the public. Organized by the Associazione Artenova with the patronage of the Municipality of Succivo, the support of the Ministry of Culture, and the collaboration of ARCI Caserta and Spaccio Culturale, this edition focused on the theme of hospitality.
The Casale spaces were divided by function: the Orti for street performers, the Aia for the food area, the Corte for concerts and the bar, and the mercatini for crafts. Concerts started every evening at 9:00 PM, while acrobats, jugglers, fire-eaters, and clowns rotated from the late afternoon.
Alongside the music, the 2026 edition featured a photo exhibition on labor exploitation, a freestyle rap battle, playful-creative workshops for children, and a harmonic meditation session. The participation of people hosted in the SAI project made the link, claimed by the organizers, between popular entertainment and conscious citizenship concrete.
