About At the Court of Ettore Fieramosca

Every year, Mignano Monte Lungo, a village in the Alto Casertano region bordering Lazio, travels back five centuries. «At the Court of Ettore Fieramosca» is the medieval festival that brings the town streets and the castle—once the home of the famous knight from the Disfida di Barletta—to life. A historical pageant in costume, contests between the districts, falconry, flag-wavers, traditional games, markets, and taverns serving local dishes make for a heartfelt, free-entry day of historical re-enactment.

A day in the Middle Ages at the foot of the castle

At the Court of Ettore Fieramosca is the medieval festival of Mignano Monte Lungo, a town in the province of Caserta, Campania, nestled between Mount Cesima and the Garigliano plain, just a few kilometers from the border with Lazio and the city of Cassino. For one full day, the village sheds its modern skin: the streets fill with ladies, knights, men-at-arms, artisans, and jesters, while the fortress overlooking the town becomes an open-air stage. The event is organized by the Municipality of Mignano Monte Lungo with the direct involvement of the local districts and associations.

The Castle of Ettore Fieramosca

The heart of the festival is the medieval castle overlooking the historic center, with origins dating back to the year 1000. Around 1500, the fortress became the residence of Ettore Fieramosca, born in Capua in 1476 and remembered in history as the protagonist of the Disfida di Barletta in 1503, the famous challenge between Italian and French knights; he later held the counties of Mignano and Rocca d'Evandro. After over fifty years of closure and extensive restoration, the castle was returned to the community in May 2018. Since then, it has served as the natural backdrop for the re-enactment, with its courtyards, panoramic terraces, and the Chapel of the Immaculate.

The challenge between the districts

The popular soul of the festival is the challenge between the districts of Mignano Monte Lungo, which compete for the title of champion district of the year. In recent editions, six districts have taken to the field: Annolise, Ariani, Campozillone, Pagliarone, Porta Fratte, and Vago Romano, each with its own colors, group of performers, and drummers. The trials are far from symbolic: they range from archery to games of dexterity and wit, as well as feats of strength that ignite the crowd. The proclamation of the winning district, complete with the presentation of the palio, concludes the competitive part of the day.

The historical pageant and performances

The historical pageant is the most photographed moment: it departs from the Porta Fratte area and winds through the town streets, with scenic stops in the squares, before reaching the castle. It is accompanied by flag-wavers, musicians, and drummers, as well as guest groups from other parts of Campania. In the castle courtyard and grounds, the program continues with theatrical re-enactments dedicated to the knight's life, falconry displays with birds of prey in flight, medieval circus performances, juggling, fire-eaters, historical dances, encampments, and ancient craft workshops. It is a program designed for families, with traditional games, workshops, and opportunities for children to interact with the performers.

Medieval taverns

As in any good re-enactment, food plays a starring role. The taverns set up in the village squares—managed by local associations, including Pro Loco Pro Mignano APS and Insieme per Mignano—offer dishes and drinks inspired by ancient culinary traditions and the rural cuisine of the Alto Casertano, served on long outdoor tables. It is the perfect opportunity to taste local products in a convivial atmosphere that lasts late into the evening.

Why it's worth the trip

More than just a parade, «At the Court of Ettore Fieramosca» is an event of identity: an entire town sewing costumes, preparing banners, and rediscovering its historical roots. For visitors, it is also the best way to discover an off-the-beaten-path corner of inland Campania, rich in castles, trails, and memory—Mignano Monte Lungo is also known for the Monte Lungo Military Memorial, linked to the Second World War. Admission to the event is traditionally free and open to everyone.
