The ancient cattle fair of Tortorella, featuring traditional crafts, rustic stalls, and folk music
The San Basilio Fair is one of the most deeply rooted memories of Tortorella, a village in the Province of Salerno, located in the southern Cilento hinterland, in Campania. For centuries, the fair marked the transition between July and August, attracting breeders, merchants, and artisans from the entire Bussento valley and beyond. After years of silence, the municipal administration led by Mayor Nicola Tancredi chose to restore it to the calendar, returning one of the town's most defining collective rituals to its people.
The mechanics of the historic fair were simple yet powerful. On July 31st, vendors would arrive in Tortorella and assemble the baracche—temporary wooden structures that immediately became communal dining tables where people ate, drank, and waited for dawn together. On August 1st, at the first light of day, the actual market opened, dedicated to livestock, rural equipment, and local produce.
Modern regulations no longer allow for the direct sale of animals, but the cultural and symbolic value of the ritual remains intact: the Ancient Cattle Fair survives as an exhibition, accompanied by agricultural tools, market stalls, and demonstrations of local artisanal crafts.
The 2026 edition takes place on Friday, July 31st, and Saturday, August 1st, with headquarters at the sports field.
The culinary aspect is not just a side dish but the social heart of the fair. The stalls serve traditional peasant dishes from the Cilento hinterland, prepared by hand according to recipes passed down through generations. During the conference on August 1st, there will also be a demonstration of pasta filata (stretched-curd cheese) making by a local farm, highlighting how the fair was historically linked to pastoral life and dairy production.
For a municipality of only a few hundred inhabitants, choosing to pair tradition with nationally renowned names is a bold bet. The San Basilio Fair kicks off a summer calendar that continues throughout August: August 16th with the Ciao Discoteca Italiana format, August 20th with Amarimai and the «Spizzikina Tour» in the Gerdanasio area, and August 27th with a free concert by Nomadi in Piazza San Vito, the grand finale of the Tortorella summer.
Those who come for the San Basilio Fair will find an event that wasn't manufactured for tourism, but recovered from living memory. The village elders still remember the stalls and the dawn market, and they are the ones who give meaning to what is seen in the square today. It is an opportunity to discover a piece of the Cilento hinterland often ignored by coastal crowds, where the relationship between devotion, agriculture, and collective celebration is still clearly visible.
Our advice is to experience both days: the evening of July 31st for the atmosphere of anticipation and the rhythms of the taranta, and August 1st from dawn, when the fair truly comes to life, until the evening concert.
As the third stage of the recovery path initiated by the municipal administration, the 2026 edition confirms the two-day formula: July 31st dedicated to anticipation and conviviality, and August 1st to the fair itself.
The most visible novelty is the emphasis placed on the musical program: after the Friday night taranta session, Bandabardò, a historic group of the Italian folk-rock scene, will take the stage on Saturday. However, the dimension of study and memory remains central, entrusted to the conference «The San Basilio Fair: Ritual and Artisanal Knowledge» and the direct testimonies of local artisans.
The fair also kicks off a summer calendar that accompanies all of August in Tortorella, leading up to the free concert by Nomadi on August 27th in Piazza San Vito.
Tortorella can be reached by car via the internal road network of southern Cilento, in the Province of Salerno; the postal code is 84030. The main events are held in the sports field area, while some summer calendar appointments take place in Piazza San Vito and the Gerdanasio area.
Food stalls open from 8:00 PM on both days; Ancient Cattle Fair from 7:00 AM on August 1st; concerts in the late evening (8:30 PM on July 31st, 9:30 PM on August 1st).

The village is small: it is best to arrive early to park in the areas near the sports field. Evenings at this altitude can be cool even in August, so bringing a light sweater is useful. For those wishing to stay overnight, accommodation is concentrated in neighboring towns and on the coast: book in advance, as the first week of August is peak season throughout Cilento.
