Pennabilli transforms into a large open-air theatre for performing arts
Artisti in Piazza is the international festival of performing arts that every year, in June, enlivens Pennabilli, a small village in the Apennines in the province of Rimini, in Emilia-Romagna. For four days, the historic centre of the municipality transforms into a large open-air theatre: the cobbled streets, squares, and courtyards become stages for shows ranging from street theatre to contemporary circus, from dance to live music, from clowning to puppet theatre.
Founded in 1997 and promoted by the Associazione Culturale Ultimo Punto, the festival has become a benchmark event for street arts in Italy. The artistic direction is entrusted to Enrico Partisani. Each edition attracts around 60 companies and over 200 artists from all over the world to Pennabilli, with a packed schedule of performances distributed across the various spaces of the village.
The programme combines different languages: street theatre, contemporary circus, acrobatics, dance, puppet and marionette theatre, clowning, walking acts, immersive performances, and participatory projects, accompanied by live concerts ranging from folk to psychedelic rock, from ska to world music. Alongside the shows, the festival offers installations, exhibitions, and events designed for audiences of all ages.
During the festival days, the village hosts the "Mercatino del solito e dell'insolito" (Market of the Usual and Unusual), dedicated to crafts and original creations, and the "Cucine Erranti" (Travelling Kitchens), offering gastronomic delights to enjoy while strolling between performances. The Palacirco area, with its tents, guarantees shows even in case of bad weather and extends the festivities late into the night.
Nestled in the hills of the Valmarecchia, Pennabilli is a village linked to the memory of the poet Tonino Guerra and famous for its places of the soul. Artisti in Piazza enhances its intimate and evocative dimension, transforming every corner of the town into a meeting point between artists and spectators. For a weekend in June, the entire community and thousands of visitors experience together an event filled with wonder, participation, and amazement.
For its 30th edition, scheduled from June 11th to 14th, 2026, Artisti in Piazza chooses the theme "Siamo brace" (We are embers): an image that evokes the festival's persistent energy, capable of lasting over time and reigniting even beneath the surface. The event confirms a strong presence of the Catalan and Spanish scene, with companies such as Kamchàtka, Los Galindos, Trukitrek, Centre Titelles de Lleida, Zero en Conducta, and Compañía de Circo "eia", alongside numerous Italian and international street theatre and contemporary circus realities.
Shows run from Thursday from 6 PM to 1 AM and from Friday to Sunday from 3 PM to 1 AM, while the Palacirco area continues until 3 AM. The village also hosts the "Mercatino del solito e dell'insolito" and the "Cucine Erranti". Four-day passes and daily tickets are available, with free admission for children up to 13 years old and for people with disabilities.
Pennabilli can be reached by car from the E45 or from the Romagna coast by driving up the Valmarecchia (SS258); the nearest train station is Rimini, which is then connected by bus lines to the hinterland. Free parking areas are available near the town during the festival.
Access to the festival is ticketed, with daily tickets and various multi-day passes for the four days, available for pre-purchase online on Liveticket and on-site during the event. Admission is free for children up to 13 years of age and for people with disabilities.
We recommend wearing comfortable shoes for moving around the historic centre, which has uphill sections, and consulting the official programme and map to plan your viewing of the shows, which are spread across multiple locations in the village until late at night.
