The arrosticino feast in the Frentano village of Monteodorisio
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every summer, the village of Monteodorisio, in the province of Chieti, dedicates one of its most anticipated evenings to the king of Abruzzo gastronomy: the arrosticino. The festival, promoted by the Municipality of Monteodorisio in collaboration with the local Pro Loco and community associations, has become a staple of the village's summer calendar, attracting families, young people, and curious foodies who travel up from the Vasto area and the Trabocchi Coast.
The arrosticino is much more than a skewer: it is a ritual. Small cubes of sheep meat threaded onto a wooden stick and cooked over the embers of a long grill called a furnacella, it must be enjoyed strictly hot, straight from the fire, accompanied by grilled bread, olive oil, and a glass of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. Recognized as a traditional agri-food product (PAT), the arrosticino tells the story of Abruzzo's pastoral heritage, when shepherds transhumed along the sheep tracks and found sheep meat to be a practical and flavorful source of sustenance. In Monteodorisio, this tradition comes alive in the conviviality of the festival.
The event blends flavor with celebration: alongside food stands serving dozens of arrosticini, you will find other local specialties, from cheeses to homemade desserts, all animated by live music, DJ sets, and dance parties that turn the village into a meeting point for the entire community. The setting at Colle dei Sospiri, overlooking the Frentano hills, offers stunning sunsets and summer evenings defined by simplicity and joy.
Perched about 300 meters above sea level, Monteodorisio is a small town of just over two thousand inhabitants, dominated by its medieval D'Avalos Castle, which now houses a museum. The festival is the perfect opportunity to combine a stroll through the alleys of the historic center with an evening of authentic local gastronomy, just a few kilometers from Vasto and the Adriatic Sea.
At this time, the Municipality of Monteodorisio and the Pro Loco have not yet published the official dates for the 2026 edition of the Arrosticino Festival. Given the usual schedule, the festival is expected to return in early August with arrosticino stands, local specialties, and live music evenings at Colle dei Sospiri. The detailed program will be published in the weeks leading up to the event.
The festival is held in Monteodorisio (CH), in Abruzzo, traditionally at the Colle dei Sospiri. In past editions, some evenings were also held on Via Madonna delle Grazie.
Monteodorisio can be reached from the Vasto Sud motorway exit (A14), located just a few kilometers from the village. The nearest train station is Vasto-San Salvo.
The festival usually takes place at the beginning of August. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: it is recommended to check with the Municipality of Monteodorisio and the Pro Loco.
Admission to the event is free; food and drinks can be purchased at the stalls.
