The international festival of figure theatre between Gambettola and Ravenna
«Arrivano dal Mare!» is the International Festival of Puppets and Figures, one of the longest-running and most authoritative figure theatre festivals in Italy and Europe. Organized by the Teatro del Drago, run by the Monticelli family, a dynasty of Romagnol puppeteers, the festival takes place every year in spring, spread between the Municipality of Gambettola, in the Province of Forlì-Cesena, and the city of Ravenna. It is an international reference event for lovers of puppets, marionettes, shadows, animated objects, and all forms of contemporary figure theatre.
Gambettola holds a special place in the festival's geography: it is home to La Stazione degli Artisti, a space of the Teatro del Drago that preserves the memory of the Romagnol puppetry tradition. The village is also linked to the figure of Romano Danielli, a historic puppeteer to whom the festival dedicates tributes and moments of remembrance. Gambettola hosts shows, meetings, and advanced training courses, intertwining the popular and family dimension of figure theatre with the most experimental artistic research.
Each edition brings dozens of shows and numerous Italian and foreign companies to Emilia-Romagna, with artists from different countries: in recent editions, performers have come from the Czech Republic, Serbia, Lithuania, Japan, the United States, Canada, Finland, Portugal, Germany, Scotland, Slovenia, Bulgaria, and others. The programme ranges from shows for children and families to creations for adult audiences, from traditional marionettes to hybrid forms with music, contemporary dance, and new technologies.
Alongside the theatre programme, «Arrivano dal Mare!» offers exhibitions, international meetings and conferences on figure theatre, workshops for the public, and advanced training masterclasses for professionals, with international-level teachers and guests. It is an opportunity to discover the behind-the-scenes of an ancient and vibrant art, featuring puppet collections, experimental fanzines, and special projects.
The most anticipated and symbolic moment is the landing of the artists in the Darsena of Ravenna: puppeteers, puppeteers, and musicians arrive by water and animate the quay with a festive parade that leads the audience towards the Artificerie Almagià. It is the image that gives the festival its name and summarizes its spirit: a theatre that «arrives from the sea», nomadic and welcoming, capable of uniting Romagna with the rest of the world.
The 51st edition of the International Festival of Puppets and Figures «Arrivano dal Mare!» was held from May 20 to 24, 2026, between Ravenna and Gambettola, organized by Teatro del Drago. The theme of the edition was nomadism, understood as journey, encounter, and transformation, with a dedicated focus on Lithuania and the dialogue with the port festival «De Portibus» within the framework of Ravenna European Capital of the Sea.
Approximately fifty events involved numerous venues in Ravenna — Artificerie Almagià, La Casa delle Marionette, Palazzo Rasponi dalle Teste, Biblioteca Classense, Teatro Rasi, MAR Museum, and Rocca Brancaleone — as well as spaces in Gambettola, including La Stazione degli Artisti. Shows for children and adults, hybrid forms with music and dance, experiments with artificial intelligence, exhibitions, meetings, and advanced training courses made up an international programme.
Gambettola is easily reachable from the Cesena Nord or Rubicone exit of the A14 motorway, along the Via Emilia between Cesena and Rimini. Gambettola railway station is on the Bologna–Rimini–Ancona line. Ravenna, the festival's second venue, is connected by train and car (A14dir / E55).
Shows for all audiences: full price €7, reduced €5. Shows for teens and adults: full price €12, reduced €7. Family ticket €20 (2 adults + 2 children). Festival Pass €80 for access to all shows.
