The reenactment of the siege of Citerna
The historical reenactment L'Invitta 1643 was created to revive one of the most significant episodes in the history of Citerna, a small and charming village in the Upper Tiber Valley, in the province of Perugia. In 1643, during the so-called Barberini War (or War of Castro) between the Papal States and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the town resisted a long siege, earning the title of 'invicta', meaning never conquered.
The event transforms the historic center of Citerna into an open-air stage: costume parades, historical tournaments, competitions between the districts (contrade), shows by flag-throwers, archers, and knights alternate with conferences and round tables dedicated to local history. There are also taverns and stands with traditional cuisine, making the reenactment also an occasion for convivial celebration.
Citerna is one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy and was much loved by the maestro Franco Battiato. The reenactment is the ideal opportunity to visit its medieval walkways, churches, and views of the Tiber valley, while immersing yourself in a journey into the 17th-century history.
The event is promoted by the Municipality of Citerna together with the Pro Loco, local associations, volunteers, and historical reenactment groups, who meticulously reconstruct costumes, weapons, and atmospheres of the era each year.
In the summer of 2026, the fifth edition of L'Invitta 1643 returns to Citerna, the historical reenactment dedicated to the 1643 siege and the title of 'unconquered' city. The organization has announced the return of the event with new surprises, shows, and moments of insight designed for adults and children.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be published by the Municipality of Citerna in the weeks preceding the event.
