The historical re-enactment that transports the Valdarno village back to the 14th century
Laterina Medievale - Of Iron and Fire is the historical re-enactment that every summer brings the village of Laterina, in the municipality of Laterina Pergine Valdarno (Arezzo province, Tuscany), back to the atmosphere of the 14th century. For three days, the entire medieval historic center celebrates: alleys, squares, and walls tell the story of a castle long contested between Florence and Arezzo, animated by nobles, commoners, soldiers, and artisans in period costumes.
The event is rooted in the real history of the village, founded around the year 1000 and later becoming a strategic fortified outpost in the late Middle Ages. The festival evokes the climate of the struggle that marked Laterina from the first half of the 14th century, when the two great Tuscan cities clashed for dominance over the Valdarno. The popular and theatrical spirit of the re-enactment offers visitors a glimpse into the identity of a border territory, suspended between the ambitions of Florence and Arezzo.
The program, built each year on a proven format, weaves together multiple forms of live entertainment. Along the village streets, visitors can enjoy:
The convivial heart of the festival lies in the taverns set up in the village, where you can taste dishes inspired by Tuscan tradition and medieval cuisine, served in a meticulously detailed setting. Artisan workshops complete the experience with live demonstrations of ancient trades.
The re-enactment is organized by the La Rocca cultural association, which mobilizes hundreds of residents every year to set up scenery, costumes, and shows. Entry to the village and the market is free, confirming the popular and identity-driven nature of a festival that has become a highly anticipated event in the Arezzo summer. Laterina Medievale is one of the most heartfelt re-enactments in the Valdarno and an opportunity to discover an authentic Tuscan village off the beaten path of mass tourism.
The Laterina Medievale - Of Iron and Fire re-enactment returns to the village of Laterina from July 24 to 26, 2026, confirming the traditional appointment on the last weekend of July. As every year, the historic center of the municipality of Laterina Pergine Valdarno will transform into a 14th-century village, with historical processions, falconry displays, sword fighting, street performers, pyrotechnic shows, a medieval market, and taverns with period menus.
The complete program, including daily schedules and scheduled shows, will be announced by the La Rocca cultural association closer to the event via the official website and social media channels. Entry to the village and market is free.
