Ardea Film Festival

A short film festival in the heart of the Lazio region

The Ardea Film Festival is an event dedicated to short cinema and the art of the short film, held in Ardea, a coastal town in the province of Rome, Lazio. The festival has chosen the evocative Giacomo Manzù Museum as its home—a national museum space housing the works of the great sculptor, which transforms into a lively hub of screenings, meetings, and training for the duration of the event.

Conceived and curated by the Atelier deUtopie APS association in collaboration with the Pro Loco Ardea APS, the festival is supported by the Lazio Region, the Lazio Regional Council, the Rome Lazio Film Commission Foundation, and the Municipality of Ardea, with the backing of the Ministry of Culture.

An international program

The festival features an official international selection of short films, documentaries, and works by students and emerging authors. The program brings together films from numerous countries, organized into thematic sections ranging from narrative works to experimental pieces:

• Première — works distinguished by artistic quality, originality, and narrative power;
• Visioni — films exploring social, cultural, and human themes;
• Prospettive — a section dedicated to emerging and experimental voices;
• Experimenta — experimental films and innovative audiovisual practices;
• Frammenti — non-standard works featuring unconventional languages.

Masterclasses and training

Alongside the screenings, the Ardea Film Festival dedicates significant space to education with a series of masterclasses led by directors, professors, and film professionals, often associated with Rome's film schools. These meetings, hosted in the museum's Forum Hall, offer students, authors, and enthusiasts a chance for direct dialogue on the crafts and languages of contemporary audiovisual media.

Festival venues

The spaces of the Giacomo Manzù Museum are divided into several areas: the Cinema Hall for screenings, the Forum Hall for masterclasses, and the Arena Space for open-air evenings. The festival also features exhibition areas dedicated to the winning works from previous editions, creating a constant dialogue between art, sculpture, and moving images.

A project for the local area

Beyond its international scope, the festival maintains a strong bond with the Ardea community and the cultural heritage of southern Lazio. The event was born with the ambition of becoming a benchmark for short cinema in the region, while simultaneously showcasing a landmark site like the museum dedicated to Giacomo Manzù and the identity of a territory just a few kilometers from the Roman coast.
