Wine, culture, and music in the heart of Brindisi along the Via Appia
Appia Wine is an event that transforms the historic center of Brindisi, in Puglia, into a grand narrative dedicated to wine, culture, and local identity. The event is inspired by the Via Appia, the ancient "regina viarum" (queen of roads) that once connected Rome to Brindisi, which now serves as the common thread for an oenological and cultural journey through the city's squares and historic palaces. Promoted by the Municipality of Brindisi in collaboration with the Fondazione Nuovo Teatro Verdi, the festival combines tastings, entertainment, and history over two festive evenings open to residents and tourists alike.
The festival route winds through some of Brindisi's most iconic locations: Largo Gianni D'Errico, in front of the Nuovo Teatro Verdi, Piazza Duomo, the Francesco Ribezzo Provincial Archaeological Museum, the former Santa Chiara convent (Santa Spazio Culturale), Via Tarantini, and the former Scuole Pie convent. Each stop features local wineries, ambient music, and opportunities to delve into wine culture, creating a continuous dialogue between archaeology, gastronomy, and city life.
The heart of Appia Wine is the tasting experience: visitors can discover numerous labels from Apulian wineries with the help of AIS sommeliers, who guide the public through the nuances of local grape varieties. A major star is the Susumaniello, an indigenous grape from the Brindisi area, which takes center stage in masterclasses and guided sessions. Along the route, there is no shortage of local delicacies and the Slow Food market on Via Tarantini, featuring producers and presidia that showcase the flavors of the Brindisi province.
The festival pairs wine with a rich program of events: conferences, masterclasses, live music, and major free concerts in the heart of the city. Oenological culture intertwines with entertainment, featuring talks dedicated to the relationship between wine, territory, and the storytelling of local production. This multidisciplinary format makes Appia Wine an event that successfully bridges the quality of a glass of wine with entertainment and the promotion of Brindisi's historical heritage.
With Appia Wine, Brindisi celebrates its winemaking vocation and the deep bond between the city, the sea, and the land. The event is an opportunity to rediscover the historic center in a festive atmosphere, amidst the aromas of Apulian wine and the allure of the ancient Via Appia, and to experience the most authentic side of Puglia through its flavors, history, and hospitality.
The first edition of Appia Wine animated the historic center of Brindisi on Friday, June 26, and Saturday, June 27, 2026, starting in the evening, with a tasting route spanning Largo Gianni D'Errico, Piazza Duomo, the Ribezzo Archaeological Museum, the former Santa Chiara convent, Via Tarantini, and the former Scuole Pie convent. Apulian wineries and AIS sommeliers guided the public in discovering local labels, with a special focus on the indigenous Susumaniello grape.
The program combined culture and entertainment: on the afternoon of June 26, the "Appia Wine Talk 2026" conference was held at Palazzo Granafei-Nervegna, alongside a masterclass dedicated to Susumaniello. In the evening, Largo Gianni D'Errico hosted the free concert by LDA and Aka7even for their "Primo e Ultimo Ballo" project. Completing the experience was the Slow Food market on Via Tarantini, showcasing typical products from the province of Brindisi.
Brindisi is accessible by train (Brindisi station) and by car via the SS379 and SS7 (Via Appia). The Salento Airport is located just a few kilometers from the city center. The event takes place in the historic center, which is easily walkable.
Admission to the event area and concerts is free. Tastings are available by purchasing a glass and pouch kit at the cash points located along the route, in Piazza Duomo, and at the former Scuole Pie convent.
We recommend arriving in the evening to soak up the atmosphere of the illuminated historic center and booking your accommodation in advance during the peak tourist season.
