Sunset group trail run and apericena in Valle Maira
AperiTrail is the event in Cartignano that satisfies both your legs and your palate: first, you run along the trails of the Valle Maira, then you gather for a convivial apericena. We are in a tiny village in the province of Cuneo, in Piedmont, where the mountains begin to rise and the paths tell centuries-old stories of alpine life. Do not expect a competitive race: AperiTrail is a group run designed for socialising and enjoying the landscape as the sun goes down.
The route covers approximately 11 kilometres with 600 metres of elevation gain, is fully marked, and is tackled at a controlled pace. The format is inclusive by definition: those who wish can run, those who prefer can walk—the important thing is to reach the finish line with a smile. The meeting point is the multi-purpose hall on Via Copetto, the organisational heart of the evening, from where the group sets off to climb through woods and mule tracks before returning to the village.
The best part comes at the finish line: the apericena hosted by the Pro Loco of Cartignano, an unmissable highlight of these Piedmontese evenings. This is where fatigue turns into chatter, toasts, and local flavours, in the true spirit of community. The participation fee for the apericena is modest and designed to be accessible to all.
AperiTrail is not an isolated event: it was created as part of Borghi ritrovati, a project funded by the PNRR (M1C3 – Investment 2.1) involving the municipalities of San Damiano Macra, Roccabruna, and Cartignano. The goal is to revitalise the small towns of the lower Valle Maira through sport, culture, the environment, and social connection, putting trails, squares, and people back at the centre. The running evening is part of a weekend full of initiatives, accompanied by events dedicated to urban art and creativity.
