About Antifascist Pasta

Every July 25th, at Casa Cervi in Praticello di Gattatico (Reggio Emilia), Italy's most famous Antifascist Pasta event is revived. The festival commemorates the gesture made by the Cervi family on July 25, 1943, when, upon hearing the news of fascism's fall, the seven brothers prepared pasta for the entire village. Today, thousands gather in the park of the Alcide Cervi Institute to share a plate of pasta, listen to music and speeches, and celebrate together the values of freedom, justice, and democracy. Free admission with voluntary donation.

A Festival Born from a Gesture of Freedom

The Antifascist Pasta of Casa Cervi is now the symbolic event of the Network of Antifascist Pastas, which enlivens dozens of Italian squares every July 25th. It all originated right here, in the Municipality of Gattatico, in the province of Reggio Emilia, in the heart of Emilia-Romagna. On July 25, 1943, upon learning of Mussolini's downfall, the Cervi brothers gathered flour, butter, and cheese โ€“ even on credit โ€“ and prepared pasta for the entire village, offering it to everyone without distinction. That gesture of sharing and popular joy has become, year after year, a collective tradition rich in meaning.

Where It Takes Place

The festival is held in the "ai Campirossi" park surrounding Casa Cervi, on Via Fratelli Cervi 9, in the hamlet of Praticello di Gattatico. The location is no accident: the Cervi family lived here, and today the Alcide Cervi Institute, with its Museum housing documents, photographs, agricultural tools, and multimedia testimonies of the peasant resistance, is based here. During the Pasta festival evening, the Museum remains open with free admission.

How the Day Unfolds

The evening now follows a well-established and participatory ritual: the opening of the gates in the late afternoon, the welcome in the park, the distribution of pasta, and then the program from the stage with institutional greetings, speeches, music, and performances. Alongside the pasta, traditional Emilian dishes like gnocco fritto and local cured meats are also available.

  • Opening of the gates and welcome in the park
  • Distribution of pasta and dinner with typical products
  • Greetings from authorities and speeches on themes of memory and rights
  • Live music and DJ set to close the evening
  • Cervi Museum open with free admission

A Link to the Theater of the Resistance

On the evening of July 25th, the festival also hosts the concluding ceremony of the Resistenza Teatro Festival (Resistance Theater Festival), the theatrical review that every summer brings selected companies from all over Italy to Casa Cervi for performances dedicated to memory, work, and rights. The final award ceremony of the festival thus intertwines with the grand popular celebration of the Pasta festival, in a single day that combines culture, civic engagement, and conviviality.

An Event for Everyone

The Antifascist Pasta festival is open to all, free of charge and with voluntary donations, designed for families, young people, and visitors from all over Italy. It is much more than a shared lunch or dinner: it is a moment of community that each year draws thousands of people to Gattatico to reaffirm, around a plate of pasta, the values of antifascism and the Constitution.
