The festival of the Patron Saint of Reggio Emilia, between faith, markets, and autumn flavors
The Festival of San Prospero is the most cherished event of the Reggio autumn. Every November 24th, the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, in the heart of Emilia-Romagna, celebrates its Patron Saint by transforming the historic center into a large festival space, where religious tradition intertwines with markets, crafts, and local gastronomy.
San Prospero was, according to tradition, Bishop of Reggio Emilia between the late 5th and early 6th centuries. His figure is linked to a famous legend: it is said that in 452 the saint shrouded the city in a thick fog, making it invisible to the retreating troops of Attila. For centuries, the people of Reggio have venerated him as the protector of the city, and between the 11th and 14th centuries, his cult spread to numerous churches and chapels in northern Italy, remaining most rooted in Reggio.
The secular heart of the festival is the traditional "Prosperino", which on the weekend before the anniversary fills Piazza Prampolini and Piazza San Prospero with a space dedicated to local farmers and artisans. Along the streets of the center โ Via Emilia Santo Stefano, Via Roma, Via Emilia San Pietro โ markets organized by street associations, with stalls from exhibitors from all over Italy, wind their way.
San Prospero is also a great festival of autumn flavors. Under the arcades and in the squares, you can taste typical Reggio and Emilia products:
The patron saint's day begins with the Eucharistic Celebration and the bell concert, culminating in the solemn Pontifical Mass of the Archbishop in the Basilica of San Prospero. Alongside religious services, the city offers guided tours to discover towers, bell towers, and art sites in the historic center. With the opening of the ice skating rink at Parco del Popolo and the first lights, the Festival of San Prospero ideally marks the beginning of the Christmas season in the city.
The Festival of Patron Saint San Prospero returns in 2026 on its traditional date, Tuesday, November 24th. The anniversary is registered in the official fair calendar of the Emilia-Romagna Region. As usual, the preceding weekend (Saturday, November 21st, and Sunday, November 22nd) should host the "Prosperino" between Piazza Prampolini and Piazza San Prospero, with stalls from farmers and artisans, while markets will line the Via Emilia.
As every year, the religious celebrations in the Basilica of San Prospero are expected, the "Autumn Table" with roasted chestnuts, chestnut cake, and mulled wine, and typical Reggio products like gnocco fritto, chizze, and erbazzone. The complete official program, with times, locations, and initiatives, will be released by the Municipality of Reggio Emilia in the weeks leading up to the festival.
