New vintages of Vino Nobile available for tasting at the Fortezza di Montepulciano
The Anteprima del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is the major annual event that, every February, transforms the Fortezza Medicea in the town of Montepulciano, in the province of Siena, into the official showcase for the most famous red wine of the Valdichiana Senese. Organized by the Consorzio del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, the event presents new vintages just hitting the market, symbolically kicking off the season of the Tuscan Anteprime.
At the heart of the event are the tasting counters set up by local wineries: here, visitors can sample the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG in its most recent vintage, the Riserva, and other local denominations such as Rosso di Montepulciano DOC and Vin Santo di Montepulciano DOC. In recent years, great attention has been paid to the new Pieve classification, a designation that highlights the most prestigious production areas through the system of twelve historical parishes (pievi).
The Anteprima was created as a forum for specialized press and industry professionals—buyers, restaurateurs, sommeliers, and wine merchants from Italy and abroad—but it also reserves ample space for wine lovers, who can access the Fortezza during opening days to taste directly at the producers' stands. Days dedicated to the international press usually precede the public opening, featuring the announcement of vintage ratings.
The setting is Montepulciano, a stunning Renaissance town perched between the Valdichiana and the Val d'Orcia, a land of vineyards and a centuries-old winemaking tradition. Vino Nobile was one of the very first Italian wines to obtain DOCG status in 1980, and the Anteprima celebrates its excellence and deep bond with the landscape of southern Tuscany every year.
Beyond tastings, each edition offers in-depth seminars, masterclasses, and a cultural theme linking wine to the history and art of the region. The event is also an opportunity to discover the many food and wine excellences and partners of the district, enhancing the wine tourism experience, which is a constantly growing phenomenon in Montepulciano.
The 32nd edition of the Anteprima del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano took place on Sunday, February 22, and Monday, February 23, 2026, at the Fortezza Medicea in Montepulciano, from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM. A record-breaking edition with 57 wineries on display, representing over 70% of the Consortium's membership.
The stars of the tasting counters were the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2023 and the Riserva 2022, alongside the new Pieve line and other local denominations. The theme of the edition was dedicated to Francesco Redi, exploring history, art, and winemaking tradition on the 400th anniversary of his birth. The days dedicated to accredited press were held on February 14 and 15, while the PrimAnteprima took place in Florence on February 13.
