Anniversary of the Defense of Rome (September 8th)

A date that changed the history of Italy

On September 8, 1943, the Armistice of Cassibile was announced. Within hours, Rome became a theater of war: units of the Italian Army and hundreds of Roman civilians attempted to block the Wehrmacht's advance on the city. The fiercest fighting took place right at Porta San Paolo, at the foot of the Pyramid of Cestius, where the Granatieri di Sardegna and the citizens who rushed to their aid held out for two days before being overwhelmed. The toll was devastating: over a thousand soldiers and approximately one hundred and twenty civilians lost their lives.

Why the ceremony is held here

Since the birth of the Republic, the Municipality of Rome and the Ministry of Defense have commemorated that day in the places that witnessed it. Porta San Paolo is not just any symbolic choice: it is the point where the resistance was most massive and bloody, and the commemorative stele in the square bears the names of those who fell during those hours. A few steps away, the Parco della Resistenza dell'8 Settembre houses the monument dedicated to the memory of the 87,000 Italian soldiers who fell during the War of Liberation.

How the commemoration takes place

The ceremony is held in the morning and follows a protocol established over the years. It typically includes:

• the deployment of the joint-service honor guard and war flags;
• the laying of a laurel wreath at the stele for the fallen in the Defense of Rome, traditionally performed by the President of the Republic;
• the performance of the Italian National Anthem and the military bugle call "Silenzio";
• the procession to the Parco della Resistenza for a second wreath-laying at the monument to the fallen of the War of Liberation;
• the participation of the banners of veterans' and military associations, the ANPI, and representatives of the families.

In recent editions, the ceremony has been attended by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, the Minister of Defense, the Chief of the Defense Staff, the Prefect of Rome, the Mayor and the Capitoline Council, along with representatives of the Lazio Region.

The district and the atmosphere

We are in the Ostiense district, one of the most recognizable corners of the Rome metropolitan area: the Pyramid of Cestius, the Aurelian Walls, and the Non-Catholic Cemetery are just a few meters away. Public participation is an integral part of the day: alongside the authorities, one finds school groups, neighborhood associations, and ordinary citizens. In recent years, the morning institutional commemoration has been complemented by evening civic memory initiatives in the square of the Parco della Resistenza, featuring readings, testimonies, and music.

A memory landmark in Lazio

Along with April 25th and the commemoration of the Fosse Ardeatine, the anniversary of the Defense of Rome is one of the most deeply felt moments in the civic calendar of the Lazio Region. For those visiting the city during those days, it is a non-touristy but very authentic opportunity to understand how Rome tells its own 20th-century story.
