It takes its name from the 17th-century Porta Portese, the monumental gate of the Gianicolense Walls from which it expands. In nearly eighty years, it has become a symbol of working-class Rome, so deeply rooted in the city's memory that it has even been featured in local folk songs.

It is advisable to carry cash and keep an eye on your bags and wallets, as in any large, crowded market.
