Roman Walks (Capitoline Superintendence)

A program of heritage walks in the heart of Rome

The Roman Walks are a rich calendar of walking itineraries promoted by the Capitoline Superintendence for Cultural Heritage of Rome, in collaboration with Zètema Progetto Cultura. This is not a festival concentrated over a few days, but a recurring program distributed throughout the year: from early January to December, dozens of appointments guide the public through the monuments, places, and spaces of the Capital—both famous and hidden—from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era.

Itineraries curated by experts

The value of the Roman Walks lies in the fact that each route is designed and led directly by the curators and officials of the Capitoline Superintendence, the same scholars who manage the protection and enhancement of the city's heritage on a daily basis. Visitors do not simply join a tour, but an in-depth encounter where architecture, archaeology, history, and urban art are recounted by those who know these sites intimately.

• Ancient and Republican Rome: The Tomb of the Scipios along the Appian Way, the funerary area of one of the most powerful families of Republican Rome.
• The fortifications: The Gianicolo Bastions, the Ardeatine Bastion, and the Aurelian Walls, featuring Renaissance defensive systems designed by architects such as Antonio da Sangallo.
• Modern and monumental Rome: The Porta del Popolo, a UNESCO heritage site, and the Casina del Cardinal Bessarione.
• Contemporary Rome: Itineraries dedicated to street art in the Tor Pignattara, Garbatella, and Trullo districts.

Monte Testaccio and hidden gems

Among the most evocative walks is the one on Monte Testaccio, the artificial hill formed by fragments of ancient Roman olive oil amphorae, which is not normally accessible to the public. The program also includes extraordinary openings of sites usually closed to visitors, offering a privileged perspective on a Rome often ignored by mass tourism circuits.

The Roman Walks are part of the cultural offering of the City of Rome, capital of the Lazio Region, and are integrated into the broader "Rome, your cultural guide" system promoted by the Department of Culture. How to participate
