The travelling animated short film festival for children, under the stars in Bertinoro
Animare Cartoon Film Festival is one of the most beloved events of the cultural summer in Bertinoro, the village known as the 'balcony of Romagna' overlooking the hills of the Province of Forlì-Cesena, in Emilia-Romagna. Founded in 2010, the festival brings a selection of international animated short films designed for children to the big outdoor screen every year, chosen from thousands of works from dozens of countries around the world.
The formula that makes Animare unique is the children's jury: spectators aged 3 to 13 personally vote for their favourite short film, expressing their judgment simply and immediately at the end of the screenings. The winning film receives the Luminòr trophy, the symbol of the event. It is an experience that introduces young people to the language of auteur animation cinema, far from mainstream commercial circuits, and transforms every evening into a community celebration.
Animare is a widespread and travelling festival: the screenings move from one evening to the next between the main town and its hamlets. The heart of the event remains the Arena della Rocca in Bertinoro, but the programme also includes the towns of Fratta Terme and Santa Maria Nuova, bringing the big screen to squares and schoolyards. Over the years, the festival has expanded its reach to include other locations in Romagna, Tuscany, and even Sicily, confirming the travelling vocation desired by Sedicicorto.
The festival is organised by the association Sedicicorto Forlì International Film Festival, one of the leading organisations for short films in Italy, in collaboration with the Parents' Committees of the hamlets and with the support of the Municipality of Bertinoro. The film selection is curated with the same care given to the sections of the Forlì festival: each competing short film is a small gem of technique and storytelling, capable of speaking to children without sacrificing artistic quality.
Animare is the perfect opportunity for a summer evening with the family in Bertinoro: cinema, stars, and fun, in one of the most charming villages in Emilia-Romagna.
Animare Cartoon Film Festival 2026 offers three evening events in Bertinoro and its hamlets:
All screenings are free admission and feature international animated short films selected for the younger audience. The official selection of competing films will be announced by Sedicicorto in the weeks preceding the event.
The detailed programme with the titles of the short films will be communicated by the organisation.
The programme booklet with the titles of the competing short films will be announced by Sedicicorto in the weeks preceding the event. The confirmed evenings are three:
As is tradition, the children present form the jury and vote for their favourite short film, which receives the Luminòr trophy.
Three evenings of free outdoor animation cinema, with a children's jury and the awarding of the Luminòr trophy. The June 26 event in Fratta Terme is part of the 'Notte Celeste', the great wellness festival of Emilia-Romagna's thermal spas.
The 2026 edition is scheduled for June 18, 19, and 26, 2026, with screenings starting in the evening (around 9:00 PM).
The evenings take place in different locations in the Bertinoro area: the Arena della Rocca di Bertinoro (Via Frangipane), the sports centre of Santa Maria Nuova (Via della Palestra), and for the June 26 event, the hamlet of Fratta Terme as part of the 'Notte Celeste' (Blue Night).
Bertinoro can be reached by car from the Cesena Nord or Forlì A14 motorway exit, along the Via Emilia. The nearest train stations are Forlì or Cesena, connected to the village by local buses.
Admission to all screenings is free.
