Dante's face reinterpreted by contemporary art, in Ravenna
In Ravenna, the city that guards Dante Alighieri's tomb, Dante Plus has become the summer event that tells the story of the poet through the lens of contemporary art. Conceived and curated by Bonobolabo, the association founded by Marco Miccoli, the exhibition began in 2014 and has established itself as one of the most original reviews dedicated to the relationship between Dante and the visual languages of our time.
The heart of the exhibition is a selection of 33 contemporary artists—the number is not coincidental, as it recalls the cantos of the Divine Comedy—called upon to reinterpret Dante's face and the imagery of the Comedy. Illustrators, street artists, designers, and comic artists offer heterogeneous visions of the poet, ranging from illustration to urban art, from design to digital experimentation. The result is a mosaic of interpretations that, year after year, presents a constantly changing Dante: "one, no one, and a hundred thousand faces," as the exhibition's historical subtitle reads.
The main venue is the evocative Casa di Oriani Library, on Via Corrado Ricci, a stone's throw from Dante's tomb and the Dante district of Ravenna. Over the years, the project has expanded beyond the exhibition halls, involving empty shop windows in the historic center with installations reflecting on urban decay, and engaging with the large Dante-themed murals that have transformed Ravenna into an open-air museum.
Dante Plus is not just an exhibition; each edition introduces new languages. Augmented reality, video games inspired by the Comedy, author-designed puzzles, and original publications accompany works on paper and canvas, bringing younger audiences closer to Dante's work without betraying its depth. Free admission and daily opening throughout the summer make Dante Plus one of the most accessible and vibrant cultural offerings in the Province of Ravenna and the entire Emilia-Romagna region.
The 2026 edition of Dante Plus, the eleventh in the project, confirms the winning formula of the exhibition: 33 contemporary artists tackling Dante's face and the imagery of the Divine Comedy, through illustration, street art, comics, and design. The venue remains the Casa di Oriani Library, in the heart of Ravenna's Dante district.
This year's theme is word games and digital interaction: alongside works on paper and canvas, visitors will find interactive projects that reinvent the relationship between the Supreme Poet and new generations. Admission is free, and the exhibition is open all summer long.
