The Ravenna festival where cinema and music meet
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Soundscreen Film Festival is an international event that takes place every year in Ravenna, in the heart of Romagna, dedicated entirely to the relationship between cinema and music. Founded in 2016 and organized by the Ravenna Cinema Cultural Association in collaboration with the Culture Department of the Municipality of Ravenna, the festival welcomes films where music is truly the protagonist: original soundtracks, biopics, music documentaries, musicals, and animated works that make sound a central narrative element.
The competitive heart is the International Competition, which awards prizes for best film, best director, and the Maurizio Principato Award for best musical contribution, while the audience votes for the best short film. Alongside the competition, the SoundscreenER section highlights film productions from Emilia-Romagna, with guests in the hall and a close look at local talent.
The most spectacular soul of the festival is the Satellite Events: silent film classics revived with live soundtracks performed by musicians and bands from the Italian independent scene. These are the events that make Soundscreen unique, capable of transforming the Cinema Mariani hall into a space for experimentation between the big screen and the stage. These are complemented by the Opening Night, tributes, and homages to iconic figures of world cinema.
Soundscreen takes place in the city of Byzantine mosaics, a UNESCO heritage site, in mid-September, a period when Ravenna and the entire Province of Ravenna experience a particularly intense cultural season. All screenings and events hosted at Cinema Mariani are free admission, in the original language with subtitles, a choice that makes the festival accessible to a wide audience of cinephiles, music lovers, and the curious.
Recognized by AFIC (Italian Film Festivals Association), the Soundscreen Film Festival is today one of the most original events on the Italian scene for those who love exploring the borderland between cinema and music, a precise identity that distinguishes it in the calendar of Emilia-Romagna festivals.
The 2026 edition of the Soundscreen Film Festival is scheduled for Ravenna, tentatively in the last week of September as per festival tradition. Currently, the official dates and detailed program have not yet been published by the organization: the event is listed among the September events highlighted by Ravenna tourism, but the Ravenna Cinema Cultural Association has not yet released the definitive schedule.
The complete program, including the international competition of feature films and short films, the SoundscreenER section dedicated to Emilia-Romagna productions, and the Satellite Events for live soundtracks of silent films, will be announced on the official website www.soundscreen.org in the months preceding the event. The dates indicated here are indicative and subject to confirmation.
