The festival celebrating blue fish and the seafaring culture of San Benedetto del Tronto
Anghiò – Festival del Pesce Azzurro is one of the most beloved food and wine events on the Marche coast. It takes place in San Benedetto del Tronto, in the province of Ascoli Piceno, in the heart of the Riviera delle Palme. The name itself tells the identity of the event: anghiò is the dialect noun used by the people of San Benedetto to refer to anchovies, a symbol of simple, humble, and authentic seafood cuisine. For over fifteen years, the festival has promoted Adriatic blue fish — anchovies, mackerel, sardines — the protagonist of a seafaring tradition that has made the city famous throughout the Marche region.
For five days, the picturesque Rotonda Giorgini, overlooking the seafront, transforms into a large village of taste. Here, food stalls, tasting counters, and gourmet kitchens alternate. The culinary heart of the event is L'Osteria di Anghiò, with evening menus dedicated to seafood tradition and local products, alongside L'aperitivo di Anghiò, featuring marinades and international flavors. The chefs at the stoves include local and guest chefs, offering mackerel meatballs, blue fish paella, anchovies in all their variations, tacos, empanadas, and the classic Adriatic fried dishes.
Anghiò is not just about food: the program includes cultural talks and meetings on the biology and history of blue fish, guided tours of the port and historic center, theatrical performances, and evening concerts. Ample space is dedicated to families with Anghiolino, the children's area managed by the Sea Museum and the Argo Cooperative, offering scientific and creative workshops. Among the most innovative offerings is Digital Splash, an immersive augmented reality experience that takes visitors on a journey beyond reality, amidst the suggestions of the Adriatic Sea.
Organized with the involvement of the Municipality of San Benedetto del Tronto and numerous local entities, Anghiò is now a regular fixture on the Marche calendar in late spring. More than just a festival, it is a celebration of maritime culture: a way to tell the story of the fishermen's work, the history of San Benedetto's seafaring tradition, and a regional cuisine that makes sustainability and the promotion of blue fish its banner. For visitors to the Marche region, it is the perfect opportunity to discover the Riviera delle Palme through its most authentic flavors.
The 17th edition of Anghiò animated the Rotonda Giorgini from May 29 to June 2, 2026, transforming the seafront into a large village of taste.
Among the guest chefs were Francesco Cingolani, Ennio Nunziato, Paolo Orazzini, and Joseph Mendoza, with dishes ranging from mackerel meatballs to blue fish paella, as well as anchovies, tacos, empanadas, and traditional fried dishes. L'Osteria di Anghiò, led by chef Federico Croci, returned with an evening menu at €30 (excluding wine), alongside L'aperitivo di Anghiò daily from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
New this year was the immersive experience Digital Splash, every evening from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM with a tasting package, and the children's area Anghiolino, open daily from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM, curated by the Sea Museum and Argo Cooperative. The program also included talks on the biology and conservation of blue fish, guided tours of the port, theatrical performances, concerts, and flamenco.
Every day: village of taste, L'aperitivo di Anghiò (6:00 PM–9:00 PM), Anghiolino children's area (7:00 PM–11:00 PM), Digital Splash (9:00 PM–11:00 PM).
San Benedetto del Tronto is served by the A14 motorway (San Benedetto del Tronto exit) and the train station on the Bologna–Bari Adriatic line. The Rotonda Giorgini is located on the seafront, a few minutes' walk from the center and the port.
Entry to the village is free. Tastings are paid for with special ticket bundles; themed dinners and menus at L'Osteria di Anghiò have a dedicated cost. Some workshops, guided tours, and the Digital Splash experience require booking. For information and reservations, consult the official website www.anghio.it.
