The patronal fair of Torano Nuovo, in the heart of the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo capital
The San Flaviano Fair is the traditional event that draws visitors from across the Val Vibrata and the province of Teramo to Torano Nuovo every November 24th. It is a patronal fair in the most authentic sense: rooted in the devotion to San Flaviano, the town's patron saint, whose feast day falls on this date. According to local Teramo tradition, the saint's remains arrived unmanned on the coast of the ancient Castrum Novum Piceni, modern-day Giulianova, and his figure has been linked to many local towns ever since.
For one day, the historic center of Torano Nuovo turns into a large open-air market. Along the streets of the village, perched on a hill in the Val Vibrata, stalls are set up by numerous exhibitors: a market of local farm-to-table products and quality craftsmanship that showcases the best of local production. It is the perfect opportunity to savor Valle Castellana chestnuts and the famous Torano ham, in a town that has earned the title of "town of taste" for the richness of its cured meats, cheeses, and earth-grown products.
The San Flaviano Fair takes place in a special corner of Abruzzo's food and wine scene. Torano Nuovo is known as the capital of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and is a member of the Cittร del Vino association: the vineyards surrounding the village produce prestigious labels, from Montepulciano d'Abruzzo to Trebbiano, and from Controguerra DOC to Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colline Teramane DOCG. Visiting the fair also means overlooking this landscape of hills and historic wineries, among the most renowned in Abruzzo.
During the fair, the traditional walk and bike ride along the Paths of Taste (Sentieri del Gusto) is offeredโa 17-kilometer cycle-pedestrian route that winds through vineyards and connects local wineries, cured meat producers, and dairies. It is an authentic way to discover, by walking or cycling, the deep bond between Torano Nuovo, its land, and its tradition of good living.
More than just a fair, the day of San Flaviano is a moment of shared celebration for the entire community of Torano Nuovo and the neighboring towns of the Val Vibrata. Between religious celebrations in honor of the patron saint and the lively market, the fair combines popular faith, rural tradition, and local pride in one of the most anticipated days of the local calendar.
The 2026 San Flaviano Fair is confirmed for Tuesday, November 24, 2026, on the liturgical feast day of the patron saint of Torano Nuovo.
