The village of Schiazzano: a blend of history and flavor on the feast of the Most Holy Savior
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Ancient Residences Festival takes place on August 6th in the village of Schiazzano, one of the hillside hamlets of the Municipality of Massa Lubrense, in the Province of Naples, Campania. The date is no coincidence: it coincides with the patronal feast of the Most Holy Savior, the titular saint of the church overlooking the village square. Over time, a popular festival has grown around this religious occasion, known to locals as the Fiordilatte Festival, which more recently adopted the name Ancient Residences Festival to highlight its connection to the 17th-century manor houses that still define the village today. The subtitle used in the municipal summer program captures it perfectly: Schiazzano between taste and history.
Schiazzano was once one of the wealthiest villages in Massa Lubrense, its fortune built on Mediterranean maritime trade. In the 17th century, the village was chosen as a residence by the Cangiano, Romano, and Mollo families, who built their own manors there and held enough influence in Naples to enter the Kingdom's high magistracies and establish public and private banks. The Church of the Most Holy Savior, built between the late 16th and early 17th centuries, is the architectural and civic heart of this fabric: the houses, workshops, and local venues still overlook its churchyard today. The festival was born to celebrate this period of prosperity, recreating period life scenes, ancient crafts, local trade, and historical regional recipes.
The gastronomic star is fiordilatte, the cow's milk mozzarella that gives the festival its historic name, accompanied by other local cheeses, particularly provolone del Monaco. The latter originated around 1700, when some farmers moved from the Naples area to the Lattari Mountains: the name derives from the cloaks resembling monks' habits that transporters wore to protect themselves from the elements during their nightly journey to Naples. It is a slow-aged cheese, matured for at least six months, sometimes cave-aged. Alongside the cheeses, other iconic products of Massa Lubrense take center stage, starting with lemons, as well as traditional recipes from the Sorrento Peninsula that feature these ingredients.
The gastronomic experience is always accompanied by an exhibition of local crafts, which in past editions has brought together traditional local skills:
Demonstrations of ancient trades, recreations of period settings, and guided tours of the ancient residences complete the itinerary, designed to be explored on foot through the village alleys during the evening hours.
The Ancient Residences Festival is one of the highlights of a busy summer calendar, where the Municipality of Massa Lubrense links every hamlet to its patron saint and its signature product: the snail festival in Monticchio for Saint Peter, Limoni in Festa in the main town, the potato festival in Termini for Saint Costanzo, the tomato festival in Torca for Saint Anne, and the eggplant festival in Marina della Lobra for the Assumption of the Virgin, featuring the famous chocolate eggplant. Schiazzano returns to the spotlight in winter with its living nativity scene, where the village transforms into an 18th-century Neapolitan scene animated by a hundred costumed actors.
It is a small, community-focused festival, far removed from the large tourist events of the coast: you eat in small squares, walk among houses with four centuries of history, and taste cheeses produced just a few kilometers away. For those staying in Sorrento or on the Sorrento Peninsula, it is an opportunity to see the agricultural and rural side of a territory known primarily for its sea.
As of today, the official program for the 2026 Ancient Residences Festival in the village of Schiazzano, Massa Lubrense, has not yet been published. The August 6th date shown in the entry is the fixed date of the patronal feast of the Most Holy Savior, to which the event is historically linked, and should be considered indicative until the official announcement by the Pro Loco Massa Lubrense and the Municipality.
Those wishing to attend are invited to verify the date, times, and program through the Pro Loco Massa Lubrense channels (tel. +39 081 5339021) and on the municipal tourism portal, where the summer event calendar is published in the preceding weeks.
