Art, craftsmanship, and the San Rocco meatball in the hillside village of Maiano
In Sant'Agnello, in the province of Naples, the hillside district of Maiano retains a rustic, artisanal soul that flourishes every summer. For three nights at the end of August, the village becomes the stage for Notti d'Autore, the event accompanying the feast of Saint Roch, the district's patron saint. Narrow streets, ancient walls, and private courtyards fill with artworks, stalls, music, and aromas: it is one of the most authentic ways to discover the Sorrentine Peninsula far from the more touristy waterfront.
The concept is simple yet effective: transform the entire village into an open-air gallery. In recent editions, around one hundred works have been exhibited, created by local artists and master craftsmen. The trades represented include:
The exhibition is accompanied by street performers, folk music groups, and theatrical moments that move from one square to another without a fixed stage: you walk, and the show happens around you, almost by chance.
The unique charm of Notti d'Autore lies in the extraordinary opening of private doors, courtyards, and gardens that are usually closed. The route has also included the oldest furnace in the village, once used for producing bricks for wood-fired ovens: a tangible testament to how Maiano has lived for centuries from the land, clay, and manual labor. In some editions, the district has also hosted twinning events with other Campanian communities, such as Foglianise in the Benevento area, with its traditional floats and straw crafts.
The flavor of the festival has a precise name: the San Rocco meatball, prepared according to a traditional recipe with twenty-one ingredients, distinguished by its characteristic sweet-and-sour taste. For some years, the Municipality of Sant'Agnello has been working toward De.Co. (Municipal Denomination) recognition, a tool that unites farmers, food producers, restaurateurs, and institutions in a single narrative. During the evenings, the meatball can be tasted at stalls along the route, alongside other local specialties.
Notti d'Autore was born around a popular cult that remains very much alive. The liturgical feast of Saint Roch falls on August 16th, and in Maiano, it extends for days, culminating in sacred rites and a procession that winds through the district's streets to reach the chapel dedicated to the saint. Along the way, you will find stalls, folk groups, and actors: the sacred and the profane coexist without contradiction, as in many local festivals in Campania.
The event is part of the rEstate Sintonizzati summer program, promoted by the Municipality of Sant'Agnello's Tourism Department, which brings concerts, theater, open-air cinema, and tastings to various districts from June to September: Villa Crawford, the Belvedere Marinella, the Colli di Fontanelle, and the Angri district square. Notti d'Autore represents its most distinctive chapter, where the Maiano community tells its own story.
Those arriving on the Sorrentine Peninsula in August will find crowded beaches and packed venues: heading up to Maiano after sunset is a different experience. You walk, you look, you chat with the exhibitors, and you eat a meatball on the go. Admission is free, and the evenings begin when the heat subsides, from 8:00 PM onwards. It is the best way to understand what the word 'rione' (district) really means around here.
The Municipality of Sant'Agnello has included Notti d'Autore in the rEstate Sintonizzati 2026 summer program: from August 20th to 22nd, starting at 8:00 PM, the entire Maiano district will be dressed up for the feast of Saint Roch.
As in previous editions, the hillside village transforms into a sprawling exhibition route: works by artists and master craftsmen along the alleys, doors and courtyards open to the public, street performances, and tasting points dedicated to the San Rocco meatball, the sweet-and-sour recipe with twenty-one ingredients that the administration is working to have recognized as a De.Co. product.
Details of the individual evenings have not yet been released. A local source also mentions the dates of August 21st-23rd: it is advisable to check the official program published by the Municipality of Sant'Agnello before planning your visit.
