Masks, floats, and parades in the heart of Altofonte, just outside Palermo
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In Altofonte, a small town in the Province of Palermo tucked away in the mountains behind the Sicilian capital, Carnival is much more than just a parade: it is the moment when the entire town gathers in the streets. After a five-year absence, the festival made a triumphant return in 2025 thanks to the efforts of the Municipality of Altofonte, with a highly attended edition that rekindled a tradition dear to the local community.
The heart of the event lies in the masked parades and allegorical floats that wind through the town center, accompanied by the traditional "Nanni", the iconic masks that have always brought the Altofonte Carnival to life. Confetti, music, and creative costumes turn squares and streets into a vast open-air stage, where children, teenagers, and adults mingle in a single, joyous celebration.
The Altofonte Carnival is a deeply popular and participatory event. The protagonists are primarily the local schools, with the masked processions of the Armaforte Comprehensive Institute students, but also local associations, families, and the many volunteers who handle the organization. Evening parties and street dances round off the festivities, making this occasion one of the year's main highlights for the community.
Located just a few kilometers from Palermo, at the foot of Mount Matassaro and overlooking the Conca d'Oro, Altofonte preserves a compact historic center, ideal for experiencing Carnival in an authentic, small-town atmosphere. Its proximity to the capital makes it easily accessible, offering visitors the chance to discover a traditional Sicilian festival far from the major tourist circuits.
At the moment, the Municipality of Altofonte has not yet published official dates and programs for the 2026 edition of the Carnival. After the successful return of the event in 2025, a new appointment is expected during the Carnival season, with the usual masked parades and floats through the streets of the historic center. The detailed program will be communicated by the Municipality in the weeks leading up to the event.
The parades and festivities take place in the historic center of Altofonte (Province of Palermo), with the arrival point usually being Piazza Falcone e Borsellino.
By car from Palermo: about 20 minutes via the SS624 (Palermo-Sciacca), taking the Altofonte exit. Train and bus connections are available from the capital to the town.
Access to the parades and street festivities is free.
