The festival celebrating the sweet Alife onion, a Matese Slow Food Presidium

The Alife Onion Festival is one of the most beloved food and wine events in the province of Caserta. Held in the town of Alife—an ancient Samnite and Roman settlement nestled in the fertile plains at the foot of the Matese Regional Park in Campania—the event celebrates a local agricultural icon: the Alife Onion, an official Slow Food Presidium.
The Alife onion is distinguished by its slightly flattened bulb, copper-red skin, and above all, its sweet, savory, and never pungent flavor, which makes it perfect for eating raw. Its cultivation dates back to Roman times and has been passed down through the centuries, preserved by a few local family farms that maintain the tradition, from the August sowing to the manual harvest and the creation of characteristic braids, known as 'nserte.
During the festival, Alife's historic center becomes a culinary journey. Food stalls offer traditional onion-based dishes—soups, fritters, pizzas, sandwiches, and rustic specialties—accompanied by guided tastings and live cooking demonstrations that showcase the versatility of this unique product.
The event is also a perfect opportunity to discover Alife's historical treasures: the Roman walls, the amphitheater, the cathedral, and the charming village streets provide a stunning backdrop for the festivities. The event is organized by the Gustumas Association, which is dedicated to promoting the typical products of the Matese region, in collaboration with local producers and the Municipality of Alife.
More than just a food festival, the Alife Onion Festival is a journey into the rural culture of the Matese area, where a humble vegetable becomes the star of a centuries-old tradition. It is the ideal destination for those looking to combine fine dining, authenticity, and the discovery of one of the most evocative villages in inland Campania.
Alife is located in the province of Caserta, in the Alife plains. By car, it can be reached via the SS158 and SS372 state roads. By train, the reference station is Piedimonte Matese, just a few kilometers away; bus connections are also available from Caserta, Benevento, and neighboring towns.
Access to the festival in the historic center is free; food and drinks at the stalls and guided tastings are subject to payment.
Evenings can get crowded: we recommend arriving early to find parking in the center and checking the updated dates and program on the organization's official channels before setting off.
