Six evenings of Matese cuisine at the foot of the Gioia Sannitica castle
In the village of Gioia Sannitica, in the province of Caserta, the Ancient Flavors Festival has become a midsummer tradition. Now in its 27th edition in 2026, the event transforms Piazza Giovanni Paolo II into a grand popular gathering for six evenings, set in the shadow of the striking medieval castle that overlooks the town. It is the most iconic event in the Alto Casertano region, drawing thousands of visitors from across Campania.
The heart of the festival is the peasant cuisine of the Matese, prepared according to age-old recipes. Throughout the evenings, a rotation of fresh handmade pasta dishes—pappardelle, tagliatelle, scialatielli, fusilli, and cicatielli with porcini mushrooms—is served alongside gnocchi with mutton sauce and tagliolini with beans and pork rinds. Traditional main courses are also featured: soffritto, tripe, mutton stew, grilled meats, skewers, and the famous porchetta, also available in a porcini mushroom version.
Beyond the dining, every evening is enlivened by live music, performances, and folklore moments that engage both adults and children. The stands open at 8:30 PM, and the atmosphere remains vibrant until late at night, amidst the lights of the square and the silhouette of the castle in the background. It is a festival designed for the whole family, where taste meets social connection and the rediscovery of the town's roots.
The festival is organized by the Pro Loco Gioiese ETS, which has been promoting the area's excellence for over twenty-five years thanks to the work of dozens of volunteers. The event is a precious opportunity to discover this green corner of Campania, nestled between the Matese Regional Park and the medieval heritage of the village of Gioia Sannitica.
The 27th edition of the Ancient Flavors Festival confirms the summer appointment in Gioia Sannitica, in the heart of the Caserta Matese region. From August 11 to 16, 2026, Piazza Giovanni Paolo II, at the foot of the medieval castle, hosts the Pro Loco Gioiese ETS stands every evening from 8:30 PM, with traditional peasant dishes and evenings of music and entertainment.
For 2026, the Ancient Flavors Festival confirms its proven formula: six evenings, from August 11 to 16, with food stands opening at 8:30 PM in Piazza Giovanni Paolo II.
Every evening, traditional dishes from Gioia—fresh pasta with porcini mushrooms, gnocchi with mutton sauce, grilled meats, porchetta, local cured meats, and cheeses—are paired with live music, performances, and folklore moments for all ages. The detailed program of musical evenings is announced by the Pro Loco Gioiese in the weeks leading up to the event.
Gioia Sannitica can be reached by car from the Caianello motorway exit (A1) or from Telese Terme, following signs for the Matese. The nearest train station is Telese-Cerreto Sannita, on the Naples-Benevento line.
Food stands open every evening starting at 8:30 PM. Admission to the festival area is free: you only pay for what you consume at the stands.
Crowds are very high during mid-August evenings: it is advisable to arrive early to find a spot. Bring cash for the stands and wear comfortable clothing for the outdoor evenings.
