Allegorical floats, masked groups, and street parties in the heart of Alcamo
The Alcamo Carnival is the main carnival celebration in the municipality of Alcamo, located in the province of Trapani, Sicily. Organized by the Carnevale Alcamese cultural association in collaboration with the municipal administration, it is a beloved local tradition that transforms the city center into an open-air stage filled with color, music, and joy. The event blends the tradition of papier-mâché allegorical floats with the choreography of local dance groups, creating an experience that engages the entire community and attracts crowds from surrounding areas.
The heart of the festival lies in the grand allegorical floats, handcrafted from papier-mâché by local masters and accompanied by dance troupes from the city's dance schools and gyms. Each float showcases a unique theme and is brought to life by dozens of costumed performers, offering a spectacle that combines satire, fantasy, and entertainment. Alongside the floats, masked groups parade through the streets, featuring meticulously choreographed routines, vibrant costumes, and live music.
The procession kicks off at Piazzale Vittime di Nassiriya and continues along Viale Italia and Corso VI Aprile, eventually arriving at Piazza Ciullo, Alcamo's main square, where the final performances and celebrations take place. Throughout the route and in the square, you can soak up the authentic atmosphere of a Sicilian Carnival, complete with confetti, streamers, and plenty of community spirit.
The Alcamo Carnival has established itself as one of the most cherished events of the carnival season in the Trapani area. Beyond its significance to the local identity, it serves as a major tourist attraction for Alcamo and the entire province of Trapani, drawing families and curious visitors from neighboring towns into a shared festive atmosphere.
The 2026 edition of the Alcamo Carnival represented a true comeback in style for the event in Alcamo, made possible by securing a new warehouse for building the floats in the Citrolo district. The parades were scheduled for February 14, 15, and 17, 2026: due to bad weather, the first day underwent changes, but the festivities continued with great participation in the following days.
The floats paraded along the route from Piazzale Vittime di Nassiriya, through Viale Italia and Corso VI Aprile, to Piazza Ciullo, accompanied by dance groups ranging from 120 to 200 people each.
A street food stand was set up in Piazza Ciullo, while meetings with Disney mascots (organized by Frappè Animazione) and a masked party at the Sebastiano Bagolino Library were held for the little ones. Mayor Domenico Surdi and Councilor Gaspare Benenati thanked the organizing association, sponsors, and the numerous volunteers.
