The awakening of the mountain pasture in Val Campelle, featuring milking, cheesemaking, and a traditional breakfast
There is a moment, just before the sun crests the ridges of the Lagorai, when Val Campelle seems to hold its breath. This is the instant "Albe in Malga" invites you to experience: an awakening at the first light of day at Malga Casarina, a mountain pasture at 1,468 meters in the municipality of Scurelle, in Valsugana, in the heart of Trentino. The event is part of the Trentino "Albe in Malga" circuit, which opens the doors of various mountain dairies across the region in summer to help visitors discover the daily life of the malgari (herdsmen).
The meeting point is at 6:00 AM directly at the dairy. We gather in the courtyard to admire the sunrise painting the surrounding mountains pink. Shortly after, the real work begins: the cows return to the barn and milking takes place, filled with the intense scent of fresh milk. At 7:00 AM, the herdsman demonstrates how that milk is transformed into cheese, explaining the techniques and timing of a craft that remains artisanal. Around 8:30 AM, the most anticipated moment arrives: a hearty breakfast featuring the dairy's own products, including mountain cheeses, cured meats, bread, and homemade desserts.
Malga Casarina is not a tourist showcase: it is a working mountain pasture where the cheese produced on-site remains the staple of the home-style kitchen. Experiencing sunrise here means understanding the deep bond between the Trentino mountains, its herds, and the cheesemaking tradition that still brings the pastures of the Province of Trento to life.
The experience is particularly suitable for families with children, who can get close to the animals and discover in a simple, direct way how cheese is made. Places are limited and registration is mandatory: it is best to book in advance through the APT Valsugana - Lagorai.
Malga Casarina is reached via Val Campelle, one of the side valleys of the eastern Valsugana that climbs toward the Lagorai group. The setting is one of pastures, forests, and mountain trails: an environment that, at dawn, offers silence and colors that are hard to forget.
On Sunday, July 12, 2026, Malga Casarina, in Val Campelle above Scurelle, hosted a new sunrise event for the "Albe in Malga" circuit. The 6:00 AM meeting at the dairy opened the morning with the observation of the sunrise over the Lagorai peaks. This was followed by cow milking, a cheesemaking demonstration, and finally breakfast with mountain cheeses, cured meats, bread, and homemade desserts. Registration was mandatory with a deadline of July 11 at 12:00 PM for this limited-capacity event, which was particularly aimed at families.
Mandatory registration for a limited number of participants; registration closed on July 11 at 12:00 PM.
