Summer Sundays featuring street performers, music, and vibrant colors along Viale San Modestino
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Al Vial'Estate is the event that, in the heart of summer, returns the most beloved public space to the residents of Mercogliano: Viale San Modestino, the long tree-lined promenade leading up to the sanctuary, which gives the festival its name through a popular local pun. On select Sundays in July, the avenue is closed to traffic and transformed into a sprawling stage, where the public wanders from one corner to the next, following the music, applause, and children's laughter.
The initiative is curated by the Pro Loco Mercogliano in synergy with the municipal administration and, in some editions, the Mercogliano Youth Forum. It is not a festival with a single stage and a list of big names, but rather a deliberately decentralized and popular format designed to ensure every age group finds something to enjoy: this is the secret to its success in the province of Avellino.
The festival's repertoire has solidified over time around a few staple ingredients. Along the avenue, you will encounter clowns, jugglers, fire-eaters, stilt walkers, and giant soap bubbles, while the designated corners host alternating musical and theatrical entertainment, animated readings, and inclusive workshops for children and teenagers. Local associations participate with their own stalls and proposals, and the avenue's cafes take part in the Ice Cream Festival, an initiative that combines tastings with a charitable cause.
In recent years, the Pro Loco has given the festival a narrative structure: each Sunday is dedicated to a specific era or theme, turning the avenue into a true "stage through time." You might travel from the 1950s, with swing music, Lindy Hop workshops, and a retro-style fashion show, to the 1970s with Beatles covers, psychedelic DJ sets, and street performers, all the way to the chromatic explosion of the Holi Colour Party, a festival of colors inspired by Indian tradition that has become the most anticipated and photographed event of the entire festival.
Al Vial'Estate is designed primarily for families. The pace is that of a slow summer late afternoon: you arrive on foot, linger in the shade of the plane trees, catch up with neighbors, and wait for the evening to fall. Admission is free and the entire route is accessible, making participation truly open to all. The mayor has frequently highlighted how this format has become a staple for families looking to spend pleasant afternoons under the avenue's plane trees.
The municipality of Mercogliano, with just over 12,000 inhabitants in the province of Avellino, Campania, rises on the slopes of the Partenio massif, at the foot of Montevergine. It is the classic starting point for climbing to the famous Marian sanctuary, reachable by funicular, and preserves the historic village of Capocastello and the Loreto Abbey in its old town. The summer festival is part of a rich local calendar, which also includes the historic "penne alla boscaiola" pasta festival and various patronal feasts in the surrounding hamlets.
In the spring of 2026, the Municipality of Mercogliano published a call for expressions of interest for those wishing to organize summer events in the area, the administrative step that precedes the definition of the program. At the moment, however, no official source has yet announced the dates and program for a new edition of Al Vial'Estate: it is therefore advisable to follow the channels of the Pro Loco Mercogliano and the Municipality for updates.
As of today, no official source has confirmed the dates and program for a new edition of Al Vial'Estate in Mercogliano. The only public information regarding the summer of 2026 is the call for expressions of interest published by the Municipality in May 2026, inviting associations and operators to submit proposals for the summer calendar: a preliminary step that does not specifically concern this festival.
In the meantime, Viale San Modestino has already hosted other initiatives by the Pro Loco Mercogliano in 2026, such as the ninth edition of Viale in Sport in June and the debut of the Antiquariando market, confirming the vitality of the public space that serves as the backdrop for the summer event.
Those wishing to participate can follow the channels of the Pro Loco Mercogliano and the Municipality of Mercogliano, in the province of Avellino, where dates are usually released in the weeks immediately preceding the start of the festival.
