A celebration of snails, Abruzzo gastronomy, and the slow-living philosophy in Casoli
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Festina Lente — The Snail Festival is the summer event that brings Casoli to life, a village in the Chieti area overlooking the Aventino Valley in Abruzzo. The name draws from the famous Latin motto festina lente, meaning "make haste slowly," and uses the snail as a symbol for a lifestyle rooted in patience, connection to the land, and a focus on quality.
The festival takes place in Piazza Santa Reparata, in the heart of Casoli's historic center, offering a rich nightly program that combines traditional cuisine, folk culture, and community spirit. The star of the show is traditional Abruzzo cooking, featuring snail dishes prepared according to ancient local recipes, accompanied by other regional specialties, fine wines, and artisanal products available at the various stalls.
The event is closely tied to the work of the Confraternita della Lumaca (Snail Brotherhood), an association of enthusiasts and producers dedicated to promoting Abruzzo's heliciculture and establishing best practices for snail farming and processing. The festival includes conferences, presentations, and the Brotherhood's dinner, weaving together culinary and economic themes: the snail is presented as a sustainable food resource and a catalyst for development in inland areas at risk of depopulation.
Set in the Municipality of Casoli and part of the vibrant summer calendar of the province of Chieti, Festina Lente is a chance to experience an authentic corner of inland Abruzzo, where culinary tradition and community gather around a symbol as small as it is significant.
