The patronal feast of the mountain village of Pizzoferrato, in the heart of the Majella
The San Domenico Festival is the most cherished event in Pizzoferrato, a small mountain village in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo, perched at over 1,200 meters above sea level on a massive rock overlooking the Sangro Valley. Saint Dominic the Abbot is the patron and protector of the town, and every year, in the first days of August, the community gathers around his figure in a celebration that weaves religious devotion, popular tradition, and a love for the mountains.
The heart of the festival beats in two locations. In the village, the solemn procession of the Reliquary Arm of the Patron Saint takes place, carried through the streets with the participation of the faithful. The celebration then moves to higher altitudes, to the evocative La Valle area, now also known as the Valley of the Sun, a plateau nestled among the beech forests of the Majella National Park, on the slopes of Mount San Domenico. Here, amidst beech, silver fir, and yew trees, the traditional countryside gathering is held around the church of San Domenico in Silvis, rebuilt by the inhabitants in 1920 in a more accessible location than the ancient sanctuary.
Devotion to Saint Dominic has roots dating back to the Middle Ages. Among the mountain rocks lies the cave of Saint Dominic, considered the saint's ancient refuge between the 11th and 12th centuries. In Pizzoferrato, as in nearby Villalago and Cocullo, ancient rites linked to the sacred rock and the protection invoked by the saint survive, a testament to a deep-rooted cult that unites the sacred with the wild nature of the Apennines.
Pizzoferrato, which Gabriele D'Annunzio called the "Terrace of Abruzzo" for its extraordinary panorama, offers visitors an exceptional setting. From the village, on clear days, the view stretches all the way to the Adriatic Sea. The patronal feast is the ideal opportunity to discover this corner of the upper Chieti region, its trails, its beech forests, and the hospitality of a community that proudly preserves its traditions.
The San Domenico Festival is open to the entire public and participation is free. Between moments of prayer, conviviality, and rediscovery of the territory, it represents an unmissable appointment for those who want to experience the authentic mountain soul of Abruzzo.
The 2026 San Domenico Festival in Pizzoferrato is scheduled for August 8th. The community of the upper Chieti region prepares to renew its devotion to the patron saint with the solemn procession of the Reliquary Arm and the traditional gathering at the Valley of the Sun. The complete program with times, liturgical celebrations, and moments of conviviality will be announced by the Municipality closer to the event.
Pizzoferrato can be reached by car from the A25 motorway (Pescina or Cocullo exit) or from the SS652 Fondovalle Sangro road. The village is about 90 km from Chieti and 70 km from Sulmona. The La Valle area is located at a higher altitude on the slopes of Mount San Domenico.
The festival is celebrated in the first days of August. For the 2026 edition, the date is set for August 8th; it is advisable to check the updated program with the Municipality of Pizzoferrato.
Free entry, open to the entire public.
Comfortable clothing and suitable shoes are recommended for reaching the mountain area. There are accommodation facilities and mountain huts of the Majella National Park in the surrounding area.
